WHO AM I WITHOUT ALCOHOL? (part 1)

That was the question I was challenged with as I left the treatment center on June 4th, 2019.

I walked into that 30-day program too drunk to feel the fear that consumed me and too sober to ever forget it. I pleaded to them, “please fix me.”

I lost only 2 pounds, despite HUGE hopes of walking out unrecognizably skinny. And I had acne like I had back in middle school. I no longer had a job and no idea how I would socialize with friends “in the real world.” I returned to the same apartment in the same boozy neighborhood with a new label that my recovery program branded me with: ALCOHOLIC.

I was terrified. And lonely. And angry.

I gave up alcohol – FOR THIS?!

For nearly 2 months, I sat in AA meetings, trying to adapt to my new normal and own my label. I drank a ridiculous amount of La Croix and took naps when I needed to escape. I wasn’t living; I was surviving. I kept thinking, THIS ISN’T ME. I used to be the “so fun” girl.

There was an internal conflict that I couldn’t reconcile. You see, I was told at rehab that I couldn’t trust myself. They were referring to the addict, but I took that as my entirety. I was told not to listen to my gut, not to listen to reason, not to question what I was learning… Because I have a history of bad decisions and look where that got me?! I could feel my soul cracking as I became someone who listened, but didn’t speak up.

Ultimately, the pounds melted off. My acne cleared up. And I started a new job as a server at a popular steak + seafood restaurant in Uptown. Day after day, one foot in front of the other, I started to get to know myself – in all of her raw beauty and pain. She wasn’t as awful as I believed her to be on May 5th.

I went through the motions + established a healthy routine, but I didn’t start truly living until the 5 month mark when I “came out.” I came out to a world where sobriety wasn’t yet cool, but people were hurting. They messaged me to tell me so. And their confessions made us BOTH feel free.

I dropped the word, “alcoholic” and I became ALCOHOL-FREE.

WHO AM I WITHOUT ALCOHOL?

It turns out that I’m still fun, still loving, still smart, still creative – and I still LOVE the hospitality industry.

I’m rebellious AF. I ask questions. I speak up. I challenge the status quo – just like my ancestors who married for love, despite skin color. I stick up for those that can’t (yet) stick up for themselves and I go out of my way to make people feel included.

I was told NOT to drink non-alcoholic beer, NOT to drink mocktails in cocktail glasses and NOT to sit at the bar… To which I grab a bar stool, raise my Heineken 00 and virtually high-five the community of over 20K.

WHO AM I WITHOUT ALCOHOL?

A mom. A daughter. A sister. A friend. A community builder… And I’m here to tell you that you’re not alone.

We can do this, one day at a time.

JUST A LITTLE HEART ATTACK // FEB 16, 2024 {part 1}

This whole experience has been totally surreal.

After 2 weeks of being sick, I was feeling AMAZING on Thursday. It was the day after Valentine’s Day and the weather was beautiful and I was super productive and I left the grocery store telling myself, “I really need to share more about my heart attack for heart month.” ❤️‍🩹

The following morning (Friday), on the drive back from daycare drop-off, things took a turn. I felt a tightness in my chest and heaviness in my arm. It came on really strong. It was enough for panic to set in and, as I got closer to my apartment building, I considered turning the car toward the hospital, but felt lightheaded.

I kept on toward my apartment and pulled into a parking spot in the front circle. I just froze, not sure what to do next. I tried to calm myself down. I did NOT want to call 911.

I went through my list of reasons why I shouldn’t call and focused on my breathing. In 7 years, there were 2 times that I went to the ER and was told it was nothing… But the time before that? Calling 911 saved my life.

It was all very familiar 🚑. The firemen. The EMS. The bumpy ride to the hospital. I cried worrying that it was something and nothing simultaneously.

My parents met me in the ER and after a few tests —and several hours — I was informed that yes, there was a cardiac event. My troponin levels were elevated. And I’d need to be checked in overnight.

As they prepared me for the cathlab, I wasn’t scared. Honestly, I started to cry again because they covered me in warm blankets and I felt safe. I was so happy that they believed me. I didn’t want to be sent home to wonder.

I stayed in the hospital overnight and was given a list of preventative meds to add to my daily routine. I need to reduce my stress, but otherwise, I’m ok. Shook, but ok.

Trust your gut. Your head (and logic) may try to talk you out of it. Your heart (and emotion) may try to talk you out of it. Trust your gut.

No one knows you like you. It’s ok to make a big deal about something that might be a big deal.

RE-INTRODUCTION 👋

Hey, it’s my birthday! 🎉 So now seems like a good time to share some fun facts + life stuff with all my friends here.

✨I’m a New Yorker, living in Charlotte, NC. I have also lived in Chicago (1 year), Florence, ITALY (1 semester) and Palo Alto, CA (Stanford grad).

✨ I was born 5 weeks early and was “Baby Girl Wayne” for 3 days.

✨Today, I turn 45. And I have a 2-yr old (🤯)

✨My son, Ashton, came home from the hospital on the 5-year anniversary of my heart attack.

✨Yep! A heart attack. I survived 4 cardiac arrests, because the EMS + doctors that surrounded me that day, didn’t give up on me.

✨Following that experience (a random and somewhat unexplainable event) I struggled with PTSD + survivors guilt. Instead of drinking less wine, I drank more. It wasn’t until my 40th birthday, when my depression was so low and my anxiety was so high, that I knew something had to change. Today, I’m 1725 days alcohol-free. (Wow!)

✨I was co-captain of my HS lacrosse + tennis teams, social chair for my sorority, and — ultimately — an event director for many years. They all tie together in that I love bringing people together + building community. If you’re on Facebook, join us inside

✨ I love to write, create mocktail/cocktail recipes, photograph/film drinks, travel, dine out and connect with friends. I enjoy learning from the stories and experiences of others. And I couldn’t imagine this life without the love of my life — my sweet pup, Charlotte 🐶

✨My work is all online. A combination of UGC, affiliate marketing, network marketing + digital marketing. I love working with non-alcoholic beverage brands to help them get the attention + recognition that they deserve. In ‘24, I want to help more mocktail creators step into the spotlight + move this sober-curious movement forward.

Sharing my life and alcohol-free journey online on Facebook + Instagram has made me feel less alone on this roller coaster of a life. I hope that, in some small way, I make you feel less alone on a day that you really need it.

I’m glad you’re here ❤️

When I found out I was pregnant…

…In June of 2021🤰🏽I laughed, I cried, I ate half a pizza and then I took a nap.

When I woke up and realized that it wasn’t all a dream, I became a mother. Every single decision from that point on was made in his best interest. And I treated my body with so much love and extra care.

I have never taken better care of myself than I did when I was pregnant. I drank lots of water, took daily vitamins and ate healthier. I of course avoided alcohol, took longer walks and rested more. When I was stressed, I took deep breaths — with the hope that he wouldn’t feel what I was feeling. I relaxed in the bath and read books to prepare me for motherhood — my best self.

If you are reading this post, I want you to take a moment and put your hand on your heart 🫀

Do you feel that kicking?
That’s your baby.

I don’t know why I ever stopped living like I was pregnant… Or why caring for someone else is more important than taking care of myself.

Since becoming a mom, my self-care has gone out the window. It’s not good and it needs to change. That’s my 2024 commitment.

If you are challenging yourself to a Dry January, I challenge you to live like you’re pregnant for these next 19 days. (Or longer). Treat yourself as though you’re carrying precious cargo — BECAUSE YOU ARE.

I share this not just as a heart attack survivor, but as a toddler mom that needs to do better.

Live like you’re pregnant…
But go ahead and eat the sushi! 🍣

I’M NOT AN ALCOHOLIC.

That’s what I said when I checked into a 30 day rehab facility — voluntarily — in May of 2019. I knew I could stop drinking if I was less depressed, less anxious. If the world wasn’t always against me.

Except that I had tried to stop. Many, many times. I negotiated with myself. Bargained. I didn’t want to be left out. I didn’t want to be an outsider. I didn’t want to be “not normal.”

I wasn’t an alcoholic — and yet, alcohol was destroying my life. It was adding to my weight + affecting my vision. It was bleeding my finances and impeding on my goals. I was irritable + unreliable. I was waking up at 2 or 3 in the morning in a panic. I stopped dreaming. I stopped doing. And in the end, when the bottles of wine were bigger and cheaper, drinking wasn’t even fun anymore. It was just apart of me that I couldn’t imagine living without.

Dry January is a gift. It’s an out. It’s an opportunity to take a break for a few days (or 30 or forever…) to detox and reflect and question alcohol’s place in your life. If someone questions you on why you’re not drinking, you can say: “Dry January.” It’s an excellent excuse for buying time… to wonder with a clear mind if it’s serving you.

Plenty of people can drink without issue. Plenty of people go on about their day without questioning their drinking… BUT if you find yourself questioning whether or not it’s a problem — like the many people that message me asking me for my advice — it’s probably a problem. It’s probably causing problems. It’s probably getting in the way of you living your best life.

The greatest gift I gave myself was 30 days in rehab. 90 days later, I BROKE FREE from a label that doesn’t fit the life I want to live. I am a loving, goal-achieving sober mom that is passionate about non-alcoholic cocktails. I am rebellious + motivated + inspired by change. I am a CREATOR of change 💥

You can call me whatever you want. At 4 years, 7 months, 14 days sober… I am free. Alcohol-free. And I’m alive.

54 MONTHS (yesterday)

Years ago, I was dating a guy who said to me, “I just… can’t marry an alcoholic.”

I was about 40 days sober at the time and I’ll never forget how it felt to hear those words. It was as if I had just been told I was unfixable, despite my effort to pull the pieces together.

I was not lovable. I was broken. Forever.

I carried on that day with a “HA! I’ll show YOU!” attitude of perseverance. But I threw in the towel a few days later with my hands up thinking: “What’s the point?” He was right, wasn’t he?! Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic.

I hate that word. I hate that word, because I’m reminded of that feeling of being incurable. The feeling that you’re destined to fail and that life will be dark and not worth living.

It would take several more years to believe I DESERVED recovery and that I was strong enough to fight for it.

✨✨✨

I’m holding up this sign today, because it’s worth celebrating — because it’s F’ING hard. There are a lot of sober influencers that will share that an alcohol-free life is beautiful. And it is! But sometimes, it’s freakin’ hard.

I was driving my son home from daycare the other day and we were stuck in traffic and I thought to myself… I really, really want to get drunk. Like, giddy, silly, lose-myself DRUNK! I wanna escape for a night and wake up hungover and drink Gatorade and eat a bacon-egg-and-cheese sandwich… And then go back to real life.

But I can’t. And I didn’t. Unlike many people that can choose to quit drinking, I cannot drink. Not one night. Not one drink.

I’m sharing this message — and a virtual hug — with everyone that is TRYING. Trying to drink less alcohol is actually harder than not drinking at all. I’ve been there. I’ve negotiated with myself and broken promises with myself. It’s hard.

If you’re TRYING — and it feels hard — pat yourself on the back for trying. Because craving an addictive substance that is literally EVERYWHERE is really, really hard. It’s okay to ask for help. I’m rooting for you.
