From Farmer Todd: an honest look at our August in the fields.

August is often a hard month for farming. The summer heat is peaking, still humid days are broken up by gusty evening thunderstorms, and stressed plants struggle to stay healthy and productive.

With a bit of creative problem solving and good planning, small vegetable farms can still produce diverse and full harvests through these long days. But, not all plans go off without a hitch.

At Crown Town Farm, August harvests have been unexpectedly light so far. Our Tomatoes and Eggplants suffered from the intense sunlight combined with pressure from leaf-footed beetles. As a result, they stopped setting fruit for three weeks, and are only now filling out again. Our bell peppers experienced substantial issues with Sunscald - where the darkening surface of fruit turning ripe absorbed enough heat from the ambient air and direct sunlight that it “cooked” areas of the fruit that would later rot on the stem. As much as 2/3 of ripening fruit were lost each week during the worst of this phase.

Then there was our summer transplants — warm weather crops like Zucchini and Cucumbers would normally be expected to do well from July-September. But establishing transplants in 95° weather, with very little cloud cover and at least minor pressure from insects, can be a tall ask of young plants. And it took three tries for our fields to finally fill in with healthy starts; setting the crop back most of a month. Our attempts at an early crop of fall Broccoli, Kale, and Collard greens did not fare any better.

All this combined for half the farm struggling, being delayed, or needing full pivots. And the additional labor in the heat to play catch up is no easier on the farmers.

Nonetheless, we persevere. The fields are as full of green as they’ve been in weeks. Tomatoes and Peppers are filling with buds. Eggplants are loaded down with fresh fruits. And Cucumbers and Squash are giving the first signs of a strong harvest to come.

With many new notes for planning and field management improvements in hand, we look forward to a strong remainder of the season, and the chance to do it all a little better in seasons to come.

Charentais melons are growing and we can’t wait!

A French heirloom variety that is sweet, floral, and nothing like what you’d find at the grocery store. Keep an eye on your CSA box and the farmers market. These are worth the wait.

“Know your farmer, know your food” has never rang more true than right now.

Recalls are everywhere in today’s food system. But 45 minutes down the road there’s a farm growing what’s actually in season. No pesticides. No mystery supply chain. Just real food, grown right.

The good news is you have options. A CSA or your local farmers market eliminates the guesswork entirely. Eating locally and seasonally isn’t just a preference, it means better nutrition, fresher produce, and food you can actually trust.

Fall CSA sign-ups are open. Season starts September 30th. Link in bio.

Summer 2 CSA started today and it feels good to be back!

A quick shoutout to the people who make this happen every week. Katherine, who keeps communications and sales running seamlessly so you always know what’s coming and where to be. Todd and Sam, who are in the field before sunrise doing everything it takes to grow food the right way, and packaging each and every bag. And JUMP Transit, Inc., who helps our CSA get delivered all around town.

It takes a team and we’re grateful for ours. 🙏

Meet the hens behind the eggs found in your CSA and the Innovation Barn.

The flock at is rotationally grazed across the property and moved regularly to fresh pasture where they forage, scratch, and dig for bugs. Along with local non-GMO feed, they’re also fed food scraps from the kitchen. Sweet potato peels, squash seeds, the good stuff.

That combination of pasture, bugs, and real food scraps is exactly what gives the yolks their deep, vibrant color. You’ll notice the difference the moment you crack one open.

We love partnering with like-minded farms and supporting one another through cross pollination. Sharing customers, sharing values, and building a local food community that’s stronger for it.
Juneberry Ridge juneberryridgenc is exactly the kind of neighbor we want in this ecosystem.

Available at Innovation Barn and as a weekly add-on to your CSA subscription. Link in bio to sign up and learn more!
