Let’s get real about chicks.
You brought these cute little fluff balls home. You have a brooder, heat source, food and water. Someone even mentioned chick electrolytes! That’s it, right? Keep them fed and watered for 6-8 weeks and then send them outside.
Wrong. Just like a newborn baby- you need to check their butts. Pasty butt is a common and preventable death in chicks. It’s where their p**p builds up on the tail end feathers and blocks their vents. It is 100% fatal and doesn’t take long to kill them.
I planned a pasty butt check yesterday that didn’t happen and got moved to this morning. Unfortunately that choice lead to one of my chicks dying in my hands this morning. We purchased her yesterday and I didn’t check all their butts when we got home. Me pushing a full flock check last night to this morning is the difference between my bird living and dying.
You can’t be lazy in farming. This is 100% on me.
