Despite being in a moderate drought zone our 3 corn varieties - Bloody Butcher, Yellow Dent, and Popcorn - are doing OK and are on track for fall harvest

🌽 Bloody butcher is transitioning in color from light yellow to deep burgundy

🌽 Yellow dent is starting to dent (this signals the beginning of drydown)

🍿 Popcorn is finishing kernel fill

Let's hope and pray the rest of the season goes well! The corn has a few months left in the field to battle the elements, insects, w**ds, and fungi

USDA certified Organic production strictly prohibits GMO traits and synthetic seed treatments, fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides.

There are a few organic approved sprays but we choose to go beyond the regulations and grow without them

Just sunshine, rain, manure and mechanical w**d control, the way people farmed before the "green revolution" of industrialized food

It's official. We have too much milk. Imagine that. We are open for fresh milk herdshares at all of our drop off sites and at the farm. Eastern Market/Royal Oak-Saturdays and on Tuesday evenings.
Another exciting thing is that we just sold a beautiful fresh heifer to another small herd up here in the Thumb. When we were starting our herd 20+ years ago, we could hardly buy a bred Jersey heifer or even a milk cow for love nor money. Now, our cup runneth over. 😉🥛🐮🐮🐮

Organic Popcorn restock heading out to Kreh Farms

Stop by their booth at the Thomas Township Farmers Market Monday from 4-7 to pick up and check out their locally produced beef and pork

We are the only USDA Certified Organic and Real Organic Project popcorn producer in the region

Get your snack fix grown the old fashioned way - we only use sunshine, rain, composted manure, and mechanical w**d control.

No seed treatments, petroleum based fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, fungicides or fumigants

Every packaging run is pop tested, make sure you keep your package sealed air tight to ensure moisture levels stay where needed

Organic Red Fife has been toted and weighed

Good news / bad news time

The good: we successfully produced heritage hard red wheat 🙂

The bad: we successfully produced heritage hard red wheat yields 🫠 - yield was comparable to what you would have expected back in the mid 1800's

The Good: we have enough seed to increase our 2027 hard wheat acreage

The Bad: we don't have organic hard red wheat for sale this year, sorry folks 😕

We'll give it another go and increase our planting acreage for 2027. Hopefully it'll be enough to produce both seed for our operation and grain for our customers

Organic heritage wheat coming soon - Hard Red Fife!

Harvested our Organic Hard Red Spring Wheat last night now it's making a pass through the fanning mill; this separates the wheat from chaff, debris, and w**d seed

Next it'll dry down for long-term storage then be sent out for professional cleaning and quality testing

This year we chose to experiment with an antique heirloom wheat named "Red Fife". This crop was grown in one of our "younger" organic fields - it's only celebrating 10 years Certified Organic 😀

Red Fife was imported to Canada in 1842 by Scottish immigrant David Fife and quickly became the standard for bread wheat across North America

I've tasted it straight off the combine and been snacking on it all morning; the flavor is very mild

Looking forward to getting this in customer's hands to see what they bake, will announce when it's released for sale
