I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am for this upcoming tulip season. I absolutely love growing these flowers, which some may think I’m crazy due to the fact they are extremely labor intensive. As a one woman show, it IS especially crazy. For approx 4-6 weeks in what seems to be the busiest time of the year, I dedicate a LARGE chunk of my time to thousands of tulips.
The way I grow them (for cut flower purposes), requires fall planting every single year. I displace A LOT of dirt and lay each and every bulb close together on top of a sheet of chicken wire to maximize my growing space and protect from any critters. Come spring, I monitor the weather closely every day and make sure these plants avoid any crazy cold weather/frosty/snow event. The tulips need to be picked at the proper stage (just after they color up and before they begin to crack open for the longest vase life), they need to be monitored and picked multiple times a day as any slightly warm day will make them bloom FAST. They need to be harvested in an organized fashion, stored in a cooler, processed, cleaned off, rehydrated, and assembled in various bouquets for my customers to enjoy!
It’s no joke and my body aches by the end of the season, but it is a process my body craves in the dead of winter. Hard work, tough work, muddy work - highly labor intensive and a rat race at times - the countdown to tulips begins.
