Mama and babies are doing great! We learned this is the best way that works for us when it comes to raising baby chicks on our homestead. Let mama do the raising (most of it anyway).
The dogs are still looking at them like tasty nuggets but we will do safe introductions soon.

🐔✨ Thinking about getting chickens this spring? You have to check out the breed Mystic Onyx. This guy was a surprise to our flock and we were really nervous about how he would do with our main rooster but ended up being a great addition and we can’t wait to add more (hens that is).

🪶Some cool facts are that they are dual-purpose chickens that were developed from Silkies crossed with larger meat birds — giving them dark skin, feathers with iridescent green sheen, and sometimes orange-red highlights. They so do great in hot and cold temps.

🥚How many eggs do they lay you may ask? Hens can lay up to around 220 medium light-brown eggs per year and usually don’t go broody, (so you’ll need an incubator if you want to hatch your own chicks). Mature birds weigh about 5–6 lbs — perfect for egg and meat production!
