Have you ever wondered what it would be like to hike across Spain along the historic Camino de Santiago? My trip there gifted me with so many riches of the heart and soul and body too. My story goes like this: I made the decision to go on this trip pretty much at the last minute. I am grateful I could spontaneously say “yes” to the many surprises that would unfold for me, and to for creating such a special experience for her group. This whole year, after completing my baking book last year, has been about exploring: new ideas, new creativities, new ways of thinking about and experiencing my life. I highly recommend anything that helps us do this!! Change for the sake of growth is ohh soo good. I’m still on this exciting path into newness.
I spent loads of time trying to figure out what I might need on the hike. Note: I had never hiked, per se, before! Long walks, sure. Speedy runs, often! But a hike-as-journey? New new new.

Turns out that this is what I needed to bring along—above all: an openness to finding out how to better hear what God has in store for me. Each day we pulled quotes that we each shared with each other. Mine were so on point!

1. People are capable, at any time in their lives, of doing what they dream of.” Slowing down, getting off my devices (though yes, I took these and loads of photos!), and breathing in the beauty of the Camino helps me get to know what it is I dream of. P.S. Dreaming is more than good! It is essential!
2. “As you move toward a dream, the dream moves toward you.” My dreams are taking shape and moving toward me! Yours can, too.
3. “Our heart knows what our mind has forgotten—it knows the sacred that is within all that exists….”
4. “It is not our job to remain whole. We come to lose our leaves like the trees, and be born again, drawing up from great roots.” Loss, its inevitability, can lead us to a new and even better self.
5. “Be still, and know that I am God.” Slowing down, watching the path that unfolds just ahead, and recognizing all that amazes, awakens, and enlightens.

Buen Camino!

Who loves kibbeh?! Many, so many. Lebanese Kibbeh is a traditional dish that holds so much honor at our tables. For me it’s nostalgic, and calls to mind and heart the deep history of the family gathering together. Such a mouthwatering blend of lean meat or vegetable, fine bulgur, onion, spices. Eat it raw or cooked in any number of kibbeh recipes.

If you are looking for recipes to make Kibbeh and keep this tradition alive, you’ll find them all in my website at the link below!

The key to truly great homemade hummus? The ingredients! Peeled chickpeas (oh yes), mild tahini that isn’t bitter, olive oil on top (not in), and a dusting of sumac too.

Happy Mother’s Day! I’m holding the love of my own most gracious mother’s memory in my heart today, with all of the gratitude a woman could possibly feel for the mother-love I have been blessed with through so many many women throughout my life. Their strength, courage, resilience, humor, expertise, family-focus, gentle wisdom, faith, talent, encouragement, generosity, empathy, love…they the centerpiece of what has made me me. A legacy to preserve and share.

One of the great joys of my life is when people tell me I look just like my mother! I’m so happy for everyone that they get to continue to glimpse her through me. I can only strive to be like her with my decisions large and small each day.

That first photo is of Mom and me in our play-filled yellow sunroom of the late 70s. I sit in that yellow leather chair often, now in my office. Second, on our maiden voyage to Lebanon together, taking a cooking class .

April was full of gifts of the heart and I am grateful! I found myself on journeys of many sorts, interior and exterior, winding pathways that open the spirit to growth.

1-6: Walking Camino de Santiago! So much to share about this special experience and I look forward to doing that as I process it all myself. Buen Camino!
7: Accepting the Founders Award from the Greater Lansing Food Bank for my father Camille Abood, in his memory. Powerful good that began from his giant heart and profound moral courage.
8-14: Easter joy with the family and at the table! How about my handsome who’s a lamb chop pro, and who makes the best kibbeh you can eat. Cousin and her pro Fatayer , plus my viral video about ma’amoul—such a deserving cookie of the fanfare! Plus: My ka’ak cookies two ways, from my baking book.
15: Beauty in spring thaw, up north in
16-18: Baking my Orange Blossom Buttercream Cake with and , from Lebanese Baking. What fun! P.S. Fell in love immediately with my dear —he’s a must-see baker! Stacks of boxes filled with goodies to bake with from
19. A wonderful feature on Lebanese Baking in Bake from Scratch magazine. Honored!
20. That face! A moment to hug my soulful, beautiful niece on the road in Boston for Lebanese Baking.
