If you’re new to wine, knowing and liking a region will serve you better than liking a specific brand or winery.

I had a coworker ask if I had “Stoller wines”. I said I wasn’t familiar with the brand but asked where it was from. She had no idea. She found the wine label and we looked at it together. The label said the wine was from Dayton, Oregon (if you don’t know what this means or where this is, just google ‘Dayton Ohio wine region’ and it’ll give you a quick synopsis of the wine region)

I said that I do like red wines from the Willamette Valley so I’d probably like it, and I’d keep my eyes peeled next time I saw it in the store. My coworker was surprised that I focused more on the region than the actual winery.

The problem with wine is that there is there’s too much of it. Unless you’re a master sommelier, you’re probably not keeping tabs of every winery to exist ever. You’ll have more success knowing that you like wines from the Willamette Valley, so that I even if you don’t recognize any brands, you’ll still likely enjoy that wine. It’s also a good anchor to ask someone “I really like wines from the Willamette Valley but want to try something new, what would you suggest?”

It’s also why I wrote a book about wine labels. The wine label will tell you everything you need to know, you just need to have a bit of context.

I think I’m finally over my hangover from

This is a unique and massive wine auction with a whole lotta heart. All proceeds go to . As a nurse, it was wonderful to me to see how they help with medical, social, and financial aspects of kids and families who need it. A truly holistic and effective approach to care.

- A fun dinner with , which made me feel the thrill and fun of working a restaurant again. The dinner was hosted at a beautiful home.
- Saw some friends :)
- We came, we had dinner, we laughed
- My sommelier crew for the dinner, Martin & Brenda, who were total rockstars. They were also my crew for the actual auction.
- We got to meet the kids who benefitted from the auction. These kids are incredible. Many wanted to be nurses. I cried.
- Saw and told her that her wine labels are in my book 📕
- The auction. 6 hours of eating, drinking, and raising money for the kids. My job was to make sure everyone had their glasses full and provided intermittent shots of espresso. We raised 32 million dollars this year.
- Lots of parties for the sommeliers in between events. Everyone may of tried to show each other up and I’m not mad about it. Extreme hospitality, as the French would say.
- A little behind the scenes. Thanks for watching 🍗

Let me save you a bit of pain: finding and creating the right thing takes forever. One you find that thing, understand who it’s for and how you can help, then go full throttle in a way that won’t burn you out.
