For the first time, I intercropped buckwheat + clover as a cover crop, and watching this little ecosystem develop has been so cool.
The first photo was shortly after germination. And then… it took off.
Buckwheat is incredibly fast growing, so I expected it to eventually tower over the clover. The clover has grown into a nice understory beneath it, while the buckwheat has grown tall, lush and covered in tiny white flowers.
And the bees have FOUND it. 🐝
When you stand near all of it, you can hear this hum of thousands of pollinators moving from flower to flower. The buzzing sound makes the field feel completely alive and I love it 😆.
But what’s happening here goes even deeper than what we can see.
These plants are keeping living roots in the ground, protecting the soil from sun and erosion, suppressing weeds, feeding soil microorganisms, adding organic matter and building better soil structure.
The clover, being a legume, works with bacteria around its roots to take nitrogen from the atmosphere and bring it into this living system. The buckwheat is an incredible nutrient scavenger, especially when it comes to phosphorus. And its fast growth shades out weeds and produces a lot of biomass to eventually return to the soil.
The roots are creating pathways through the soil, feeding microbial life and helping build aggregation and structure.
Then above ground, the flowers are feeding bees, beneficial insects and other pollinators and adding another layer of biodiversity to the farm.
Eventually, this crop will die back after a few frosts and return all of that plant material back to the soil, where it becomes food / fertilizer for the next growing cycle.
No harvest / cash crop for us from these beds right now. Instead, we’re growing something for the soil.
