First round of heritage turkey poults are ready! Straight-run.
This year, I'll be doing two options: Mix #1 is a mix of blue and lavender calico, sweetgrass, and fall fires (20/ea). Mix #2 is slate, lilac, lavender, rusty black, and tri-color mottled black (15/ea). Most poults will be penciled or semi-pencilled.

We were hoping to avoid fundraising, but the grants we applied for didn't come through, so - long story short, we've been displaced more than four times and finally have an opportunity to land at a forever farm, which will allow us to really commit to our work and support our community to a greater extent - but we need the funds to fence in the new area and get secure housing set up for the animals. We will be operating a regenerative silvopasture farm that allows us to both expand our breeding of high-welfare breeds and sustain the local ecology harmoniously, but we need support to get there. Thank you!

“Keeping the classic breeds alive is the only way to preserve genetic diversity and to save animals that have valuable genetic traits breeders may want to breed back into commercial lines in the future… If a serious disease ever kills commercial broilers or layers, the entire world will be thanking the small producers and hobbyists who have kept the old breeds of [poultry] from becoming extinct.” Temple Grandin, Animals Make Us Human

A 1997 census by the Livestock Conservancy found less than 1,500 heritage turkeys documented in the entire country. Though a valiant push to bolster these numbers brought heritage turkeys back from the brink of extinction, still only around 1% of the turkeys consumed as food in the United States are heritage today. We see this across all kinds of livestock - genetically homogenous production breeds with poor welfare, poor resiliency, and poor adaptivity are the overwhelming majority of agricultural animals. In the face of changing climate, we’re going to need animals and practices that can work in tandem with ecology, not in spite of it. Heritage breeds are able to smoothly blend into integrative permaculture systems, native environments, and ecologically sound farm practices in a way that production breeds have been bred to be fully incapable of.

We are ISO LGD pups available this spring or summer. Leaning towards Karakachan or Maremma but open to others. Will be used for poultry; history of poultry-safe dogs is a big bonus. OFAs on parents is essential, would like to meet parents and learn your breeding and raising standards before committing. (note; wifi is spotty until early Feb so I may take a bit to respond, we can swap phone numbers for prompter replies. thanks!)

I miss gosling season. As much as turkeys are my passion, geese are so silly and personable, I always get a kick out of spending time with the babies. (and if you spot the single little turkey poult, that's my sweet girl Biscotti, who's all grown up now!)
