Sparrow doesn’t let size get in the way of who rules the grain bucket… She’ll even push mom out of the way 😳

Things have been busy around here, and as we’re getting ready for our second milk test next week, I realized I never shared last month’s results!

This one was especially exciting — it was Moon Shadow Acres’ very first DHIR milk test, and all four does on test were first-generation Moon Shadow Acres first fresheners. A huge step forward for our program, and I couldn’t be happier with these girls!

Here’s how everyone did:

Poppy (FF, quads)
23 DIM • 3.4 lbs • 5.3% BF • 3.9% Protein

Magnolia (FF, triplets)
26 DIM • 3.6 lbs • 3.0% BF • 3.8% Protein

Velvet (FF, triplets)
24 DIM • 4.9 lbs • 4.5% BF • 3.7% Protein

Sassafras (FF, twins)
23 DIM • 3.5 lbs • 5.2% BF • 3.8% Protein

Super proud of these girls, especially as first fresheners, and really excited to watch how they continue to develop as the season goes on.

Poppy might need her own series because this girl has opinions… and a whole lot of personality 😂

POV: You’re Poppy, and you’d like to speak to the manager because the “farm hand” has clearly forgotten the proper order of chores and had the audacity to stop for a sip of coffee before bringing the grain. The disrespect.

POV: You went from no kids to four kids and it’s now your full time job to find hiding spots where they can’t catch you to nurse. An igloo works great because while they can jump their coordination still isn’t good enough to stick the landing and latch.

‼️Please note: Poppy is a great mom and feeding all four of her girls well 😂💛

We definitely don’t play favorites… but someone had to go last, and this girl holds a special place in my heart.

Moon Shadow Acres MB Sassafras was my final doe to kid this season. After a long week of ups and downs, I’ll admit I was a little on edge. The second she started showing signs of labor, I was watching way too early, after pulling an all-nighter with Poppy, I told myself I’d sleep and just check on her every 30 minutes…
5:30am — nothing. 6:00am — nothing. 7:00am — still nothing… and now I’m starting to stress

By 7:30am I was heading to the barn ready to come up with a game plan because clearly something had to be wrong. Then I heard a loud yell and ran down to find Sass trying to push a baby… directly into the wall (genetics, apparently — it’s exactly how she was born 😂).

I slid her over just a bit and that baby came right out. Not even five minutes later, still standing, she pushed out a second with one big yell. My little Sass gave me two beautiful, giant doelings. I checked more than once because I was convinced they had to be bucklings with their size!

She really came through with a smooth, uneventful kidding — the perfect way to wrap up the season. Her girls are already practically as tall as she is, and just like her dam, Sass is completely devoted to her babies. They’re her whole world — a tiny little clique of three — and the only time she’s had any “struggles” with motherhood is when her girls insist on wandering off to play with the other kids 😂 finally I can say, that’s a wrap!
