MARKET REPORT
AUGUST 6, 2025

06/06/2025

We had right at 395 head of cattle this week, the market continues to ascend itself into the stratosphere of higher prices. The driving force being the price being paid by the packers for fat/finished cattle. As long as that price continues to move higher, the futures follow, the buyers reset their breakevens and the market moves forward.

Herd expansion continues to be the buzzword in the industry, in our area and in many places I believe it’s fully underway. The moisture has matched up to the economics of the current business model, and people are chasing these females like never before..

It’s the time of the year, where you start to see market reports use the term “new crop” calves. This term is used to reference younger calves that are unweaned, fleshy, higher risk type animals to pre-con. Especially with increase in temperatures and humidity.

Packer cows and bulls remain stupid high, stocker cows, and pairs are right there with them, seems like everybody and their mother wants to buy a cow these days, but that’s a good thing. Your herd is like a rose bush, keep it pruned and watch it bloom.

See you at the Gate!

Market was stellar once again this week.
Light cattle especially, we had two buyers really pushing to get some bought and we had the right kind of calves to do it on.

With cattle being so high buyers often look towards a lighter calf cause it’s gives them more options and time to try to cheapen them up. One buyer told me after the sale, “you may get tired of looking at the little Sob for a year, but he has a better chance of breaking even than some of those bigger cattle.” Cattle business is funny like that, where breaking even is considered a success.

“Have people started to rebuild their herds?” Probably the number one question on the catwalk right now. Also one of the top indicators for the market going forward for two reasons. One is the short term aspect in that if people keep heifers that takes more numbers out of current supply. Flip side is more production numbers down the road add to the cattle supply.

As I’ve mentioned before in my area it seems more that people want to restock with a bred cow or pair rather than keep their heifers back. Stocker cow and pair demand is great, lots of orders on them right now in the barn, majority of them going north though, I’d like to see a few more stay local.

Marketing=Timing! Many barns up the way have canceled due to the weather this week and those that are open are experiencing light receipts. So that means decreased numbers during an especially high demand period. There will be increased eagerness in the air when the weather warms up, especially on the packer cows and bulls.

See you at the Gate!
