Because I forgot yesterday, it’s been a crazy weekend…this week’s MVP goes to my starter, “Dumbledough”. You know, like the Harry Potter (iykyk) Dumbledore. This awesome starter is the reason for all of my sourdough recipes. Strong, perfect and makes all kinds of recipes such as bread, cinnamon rolls, danishes and even dried starter to make your own.

People name their sourdough starters mostly for fun and personality, but there are a few deeper reasons too.

1. It feels like a “living thing”

A sourdough starter is actually alive—it’s a colony of wild yeast and bacteria. Since you:
• feed it
• watch it grow
• keep it for years

people start to feel like it’s a little kitchen pet, so naming it feels natural.

2. Bakers keep starters for years (even decades)

Some starters get passed down through families or shared with friends. Naming them gives them a story and identity.

3. It makes the process more fun

Sourdough can feel like a science experiment at first. Giving the starter a name turns it into something less intimidating and more playful.

You’ll hear bakers say things like:
• “I fed Gertrude this morning.”
• “Sir Rise-a-Lot is very active today.”

4. It’s a baker culture thing

In sourdough communities, naming starters has become a bit of a tradition and inside joke. It’s part of the charm of baking with wild yeast.

Fun fact

There are starters in the world that are 100+ years old, so people treat them almost like family heirlooms.. I will be showing you what I make with Dumbledough this week. Any suggestions??

Look at how pretty this speckled egg is. So this weeks MVP is our eggs. Better weather means more eggs. We use these eggs on the daily. Whether it’s for the danishes that we sell on here to egg salad sandwiches. Do we sell eggs??! We do!

So per our cottage law, you are not allowed to sell anything that has to be refrigerated…such as milk. So I’ve been playing around with shelf stable cinnamon rolls. I have successfully got it. As you can see, I couldn’t help but take a bite.

🏆🌟 MVP OF THE WEEK: Lilly the Logic Queen 🌟🏆

Everyone meet Lilly, our brilliant white 🐔💭 — and let me tell you, this girl is not just a pretty set of feathers. She is SMART. Like… calculating-the-room-before-she-moves smart.

✨ Breed Spotlight: White Leghorn Facts!
Did you know White Leghorns are:
🥚 Egg-laying machines — often producing 280–320 bright white eggs per year!
🧠 Known for being alert, observant, and highly intelligent
⚡ Super efficient foragers (they don’t miss a thing)
🌎 Originally from Italy — but became egg-industry superstars in America

Lilly absolutely lives up to the reputation. She studies situations before jumping in. She figures out feeder mechanics faster than the rest. She knows my routine. If there’s a new change in the yard? She notices first.

She may not always be the loudest in the flock, but she’s the one calculating her next move like a tiny feathered engineer.

And let’s be honest… that sleek white glow and bright red comb? Total classic beauty. 🤍❤️

Drop a 🥚 in the comments if you love a smart girl moment.
Lilly approves of strategic admiration.

I have not been super active on here which is probably why the algorithm isn’t looking good on my side. So I thought I would start posting a “ farmstand feature” post. So each week I will post something that is working on the homestead. Whether it’s a chicken or bread or whatever. To start this week, this is my helper and farmyard MVP, Harry. Harry protects the feathered workers from air predators. He’s a defender of the flock. He’s a big marshmallow though when it comes time for cuddles. Harry is a pitbull and boxer mix. Came from Shelby Humane Society and is the most gentle treat taker you will ever meet. He is praise driven and loves to play with other animals. Let’s hear it for Harry!! Would you like to know anything about Harry?

Was thinking about having another sourdough class. Any interest? Only a certain amount of spots will be available.
