Another camp.

Each week we visit several homeless camps in Oakland. Since the pandemic, we have taken fresh vegetables and fruits from the garden to camps that have the ability to cook. We’ve taken homemade muffins, scones and other goodies. In cooperation with others, those camps without the ability to cook, meals have been provided.
Caring for those less fortunate, is a priority.

Christmas 2020 was a time of giving. We put together Christmas bags filled with socks, hand and foot warmers, water bottles, snack bars and blankets for the homeless we help feed in Oakland. We made cookies, fudge, muffins and even a meal or two to share with delivery persons, neighbors, new ones we’d just met to old time friends, special people that we’d cross paths with.
Such a joyous time!!

Thanksgiving has always been a favorite time at Buttercup Farms. We invite old friends and new friends to share our day of giving thanks. This year the gathering was smaller because of the virus but the heart was still here. As always, connecting with our friends is so special and the food was great. Everyone brought something to share.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all our friends and extended family from around the world. Thank you for adding so much to our lives. 🤗

Buttercup does its part to fill the “cups” by making face masks for those in need during the covid shut down❣️

Some of the face masks made and given out. Some were given to a policeman to give to those who didn’t have one.

Caring For The Homeless

On Sunday evening August 19th. NBC will air a special on the Homeless in America. This means a great deal to us at Buttercup farms. Our visitors from around the world comment of how much suffering they see right here in the Bay Area.

This NBC special will highlight some of the good work being done in the Los Angeles area. There is a very uplifting story regarding the program started by Vijay Cupta, the violinist with the Los Angels Philharmonic.

Please check your local listing. However, we believe it airs at 7pm ET/Pt and 6pm Ct.

Recipe: No-Time Bread

We have hosted some really good cooks on the farm. We thought we'd share some recent recipes here.
Trine Anemone Anderson from Denmark gave us
Worlds best bread:

625 g (ca. 1 liter) flour
1/2 liter of water
2 teaspoons salt

A quarter of a package of active dry yeast.

Mix the yeast with the water in a bowl and give it a good stir. Add flour and salt and keep stirring until the dough gets to a conform structure. Leave to rise for about 12 hours.

Put a little flour on the table, and get the dough out of the bowl on to the table. Fold the dough on top of itself three times changing from right to left. Put it in an oilcovered bowl with a towel over it and leave to rise for another two hours.

Turn the oven to 500 degrees (or as high as your oven will go) and leave a dutch oven inside to be heated. Once the dutch oven is thoroughly heated, you tilt in the dough, put the lid on and put it back in the oven.

Bake for 30 minutes. Then turn the oven down to 425 (or just 45 lower than what it was on), take off the lid and bake for another 15 minutes. When the bread is finished, let it cool and rest for about fifteen minutes before cutting and serving.

(For a quicker and thereby not as delicious dutch oven bread, look up recipe `no-time bread`, http://www.thekitchn.com/recipe-notime-bread-40653 )

She also made the best borscht any of us had ever tasted using beets from our garden. Here's the link to the recipe.

So, by now you've tried No-Knead Bread and No-Knead Bread in a Hurry, a slightly quicker variety, and you've seen how easy it is to bake bread at home. The No-Knead phenomenon is still going incredibly strong, over a year later, and we think it's because it's taught so many people how easy bread rea…

Amazing Grace

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving here on the farm with over twenty guests joining us for a day of camaraderie, conversation and cuisine. We were blessed with a mild day and were able to have our afternoon dinner out by the pool. It was a great chance to catch up with old friends and learn more about new ones. A particular highlight of the day, was a mother-daughter duet of Amazing Grace, sung by Awana and her mother Jamila. (It turned into a trio, as Tony the canary can be heard singing along!)

Our good friend Dah Sira Ka arrived safely in her home country of Senegal last week. Dah worked off and on with Buttercup Farms for over two years helping manage the Angels Camp World Mercantile and volunteering here at Buttercup Farms. We will miss her warm smile, energetic personality and expertly baked carrot and pineapple-upside-down cakes! Dah will be back in Senegal where she is president of Girls Entrepreneurs of Kaolack (JFEK). We all wish her the best and hope to see her again soon!
