I’ve decided I need to be more transparent with pricing, it’s kind of something we are nervous about. And I feel bad asking for so much for a cake, but I’m quickly burning out of doing this for a living, because it’s not sustainable.
My minimum price for any cake is $75, but they’re typically going to run closer to $100. A big reason is because my cake “shifts” are a full 8 hour day. Not including breaks of sitting down or parenting.
Let’s break it down a cake that is $100:
a cake costs me $20-$30 for supplies, and I’ve just worked on it for 8 hours.
So $100 your cost - $25 my cost = $75 for my labor.
But I just worked 8 hours on your cake, not including my water bill, time spent cleaning up, or wait time in between tasks (like cooling and drying).
I’ve only made $9.37 an hour.
It’s a fun thing to do as a hobby, and I don’t mind, I love it!! But it can be very taxing to work full time at a wage around minimum wage.
I’m trying to decide if it’s worth it because I feel terrible charging over $100, yet I need to do around $150 to even have a low waged job.
The hard thing is that everyone that is asking typically isn’t expecting to spend $150 because we all want amazing cakes for ALL events, not just the big ones.
I’m at an impasse between loving what I do and feeling undervalued and used. What are your thoughts?
