Look, my online sales are modest at best, I’m STILL finalizing two out of four recipes for rebottle (still!), and I’m trying to run my current stock out, BUT…I thought this was important to share.
I’ve had several conversations with fellow food founders about the ICE out, spending/selling freeze for Jan 30th, and the big concern has been the obvious: alienating customers and losing out on money. BIG stuff to a small business. If you know me, seeing where I align on topics of inclusivity and immigration should be no surprise to you; I’ve created a sauce line based on Latin flavors for crying out loud, and have a deep love and respect for the Mexican cuisine that I’ve been inspired by. I grew up with two chefs, and food was our passport to the world.
Learning, tasting, and experiencing other cultures through food is one of life’s greatest joys and will always be something that brings us together, if we let it.
Growing up in the PNW, an area rich with Native American, Asian, and Latin communities, life and the people that made it fun looked different than me, sounded different than me. One third of my elementary school was Vietnamese after the waves of refugees in the 70’s and 80’s.
“Different” looking families, languages, smells, and cultural norms were a part of life. It wasn’t threatening; it was interesting and exciting. Both my middle school and high school were incredibly diverse. This was our normal, and was one of the things that I grew up believing was so great about our country.
My mom’s dad, “Papa,” was the youngest and only one of his siblings to be born in this country. They built a community in Renton, WA, and made lifelong friends with other Italian immigrants, and ate pretty well in the meantime. Almost all of us have a story of how we got here: some by choice with hopes for something better; some out of fear, necessity, and survival; and some against their will. But here we all are.
