FAQ: When ordering a bottle of wine at a restaurant, what do I do when the server hands me the cork?

The easy answer? Nothing!

You can smell the cork and inspect it for any potential faults in the wine, but the cork isn't super trustworthy. Instead, wait for them to pour you a small taste to decide if the wine is the one for you.

Screw caps get a bad rep, but can contain great wines! Corks are typically used for bold red wines, as the cork allows for some oxygen to enter and mix with the wine as it ages. You'll typically find screw caps on lighter, fruiter wines that don't age as long and screw caps also help to avoid "cork taint" on the wine!⁠
