The scent of drying Goldenrod nectar has filled the air in our apiary this morning. To some it is an off-putting scent, to me it is infatuating! It is a strong scent that let's me know the girls are packing on the pounds in preparation for winter, some are even making more than they need which means we will in all liklihood have some fall honey to offer up later in the year. It is much more bold flavored than the traditional spring honey and it isn't for everyone, however I find the strong flavors exciting making it my go to whenever I can get ahold of it!

We've been cleaning some things up around the farm and keep finding cool little critters, here's a Blue Tailed Skink that caught my eye.

Feeding a queen starter colony.

Proper nutrition is very important to queen rearing, without it the nurse bees will not be able to make royal jelly in the ammounts required to adequately feed a dozen new queens, leading to poor quality queens. What I have given them today is only supplementary nutrition and is not intended to be a direct replacement to their normal forage. I gave this colony a full frame of nectar and half a frame of bee bread yesterday afternoon before giving them newly grafted larva, these supplements will only be used if the bees feel what they have is inadequate.

Hey for all those that are struggling with overgrown gardens and time to get everything done here is some hope. Many times over my years of gardening and growing food I have seen w**d thickets produce bounty disbite neglect, postponeing and opps in the garden. This w**dy and overgrown grass garden looks rough but I got some beautiful purple green beans and purple broccoli a few days ago and today some garlic scapes. I have seen nearly every garden over the past few years has had some type of issue come up. And I have seen it keep going despite those issues and although not every thein or plant makes it something usually does.

Can you find the queen? This is an easy one, I may try to find some harder to spot queens in the future... I've got several!
