But the laboratory has already begun to change.
The orchard has darkened.
The air has turned cold.
The harvest has been collected after sunset.
For weeks, our researchers have been working beneath low laboratory light, reducing fruit, extracting spice, burning onions, and introducing variables that perhaps should have been left alone.
Three specimens survived.
