The harder side of farming.
One of my pea chicks became very ill very suddenly. She was smaller because she was the last hatched and somewhat picked on some by her older siblings, but she was always fast and feisty. Within two days, she can't even stand. She is currently set up in my house in front of the brooder and I am giving her water medicated with Corid via eye dropper and I'm hoping she pulls through. đź’”

Happy Friday! Look at the color of this dahlia - she embodies the colors of a perfect sunset and she is absolutely stunning. I'm thinking about crossing her with a ball dahlia to see if I can get that color on a larger flower head. Fingers crossed!

Side note - I was watching Star Talk with Neil deGrasse Tyson earlier and learned something I can't stop thinking about. We have seven days in the week because our ancient ancestors could only see seven planets, and the days of the week are named after them. The sun counted as a planet back then because "planet" simply meant anything that moved through the sky.

Friday gets its name from Fr**ga, the Norse goddess of love, marriage, and household wisdom - standing in for Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty. That connection to Venus never disappeared in the Romance languages. In Italian, Friday is still Venerdì.

So every Friday, whether you know it or not, you are celebrating love, beauty, and the planet Venus. Seems like a good reason to look at a gorgeous dahlia!

We have a cupcake queeny zinnia? Not really sure what she's trying to be, but she's beautiful.

What a weird picture for a farm to post, huh? Don't worry, I'll add pretty flower pics in the morning.

This small sink cleared of dishes represents a huge victory for me. I have made no secret of the fact that I am autistic and ADHD and these neurotypes already cause me to have a profound struggle with task initation and completion. Since my injury, my medications do not work the way they used to so I have struggled even more with daily tasks. I have struggled so much, not just with the physical ability to stand in front of a sink for any period of time to wash dishes which makes them pile up relentlessly, but also with the mental capacity to start and complete tasks. It is one of the things that led to a deep depression and abundant feelings of shame since my spinal cord injury. Especially since mom has had to help with things that, I, an adult, should be capable of doing myself.
My doctor and I have been changing my medications to help improve my functionality and we may have found the golden ticket. Today, for the first time in a year, I washed both sinks and a counter full of dishes by myself. Did it take all day because my legs still won't stand that long and the heat from the water makes me physically ill? Absolutely. But, I did it.
Today is the first time in over a year I feel like myself. Today is the first time in over a year that I don't feel like a complete and abject failure faking my way through a recovery that I feared would never actually happen from a neuroimmune condition so rare that our small county has twice as many hashtag mentions as it does. Today is the first time I really feel like I will recover and be me again and I was so excited I had to share it with all of you.

While propagating mountain mint yesterday evening, we were treated to this awesome double rainbow and I made a new friend! I think she is a Goldenrod Crab Spider. I'm really happy to have her here because she is great for pest management in the flowers, harmless to humans, and is an ambush hunter so no pesky webs to deal with. These beauties can also change the color of their body over the course of several days from white to yellow to better camouflage within their environment. Oh, and one more fun fact, the females of this species are two to three times larger than their male counterparts. Nature is lit!

I was looking through some old videos and found one of Iggy coming for his banana. He was such a good boy. 🤗

The chicks are getting quite large. They'll be joining the older girls in the lot soon.
