🌙 Moonlight Granny Square Pattern
Hook: 6 mm
Yarn: Two colors — A (moon) and B (background/sky)
Skill level: Confident beginner/intermediate
➡️
Round 1 – Form the Moon (Color A)
Make a magic ring.
Ch 2 (counts as first hdc).
Work 11 hdc into the ring.
Join with sl st to top of ch 2. (12 hdc)
(You now have a flat little circle — the moon.)
➡️
Round 2 – Shape the Crescent
Still using Color A:
Ch 2. In next st work 2 hdc. Repeat hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next around. (18 hdc)
Join with sl st.
Fasten off.
Switch to Color B (background).
➡️
Round 3 – Square the Circle
Join Color B in any stitch.
Corner: (Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same st.
Side: Skip 2 sts, 3 dc in next st → repeat from Corner to Side around until you have 4 corners and 12 groups of 3 dc.
Join with sl st to top of ch 3.
(You’ve now transformed your moon into a soft-edged square — the beginning of a granny form.)
➡️
Round 4 – Build the Square
Ch 3 (counts as dc).
In each corner: (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc).
Between corners: 3 dc in each space between clusters.
Continue around and join.
Repeat Round 4 until your square is the size you want.
🍬Optional – Add the Crescent Glow
If you want that “moon” to have a crescent shadow, after finishing Round 2, switch to Color B early and only half-circle around 6–8 stitches of the moon before starting the square — this makes one side darker, mimicking the shadowed side of a moon.
