Many people ask me if I have a greenhouse. My greenhouse all these years has been my basement! I have 6 large shelving units with grow lights above each shelf. I don’t even have heat mats for the plants and my basement is not heated. It is dingy, it is damp, there are a lot of cobwebs and probably other uninvited guests that I don’t care to think about but to be honest, I love the entire process of sowing these seeds. I love the quiet time that I get to have with God. To think about Him, to think about life, to think about the miracle of flowers and all of His creation. I am completely grateful that I can do what I do for now. We don’t know what tomorrow will bring but for now, I am thankful to be in my basement planting seeds that will soon be exquisite flowers for others to enjoy.💐

Sweet peas are one of my very favorite flowers to grow and it is because their beauty is unique and their fragrance is incredible!
Honestly, I can't stop looking at them when they are in bloom! They take my breath away and so does their perfume *. They are tricky to grow in our zone though and I don't always get it right. Last year I planted out too late in the season and they did not do well. Just like regular peas, they like it cool. This year I'm going to start them inside as usual but the minute I see the germination, they are going outside. I'll keep them in the cell pots still but l'll put a simple low tunnel over them. This will create robust seedlings for planting out when the time is right.

My little companion and I are down in the basement filling more seed flats for planting. This old boy was a feral barn cat for decades until the owner of the farm passed on. He started to wander over to our place but he was extremely skittish and wouldn’t let us anywhere near him. My husband started to leave some food out for him and little by little he began to eat on our porch and then to our amazement, he inched closer to my husband and allowed him to pet his head. Long story short, he is now living in our house and he loves us both. He is the most affectionate cat! He is old and he is completely deaf but he LOVES to be near us. If he can’t find us he howls! He has never had companionship like this before. he has lived his entire life out in the barn next door, even during the cold winter months. He is living his last years like a king now.

This is where it all begins each season! I spend a great deal of time downstairs in my basement starting almost 5000 seeds and then nurturing the seedlings for months before planting them out into the fields! It is a real labor of love with lots of trial and error, many lessons to learn and experience and just the privilege of watching life appear from a tiny seed is a true miracle to behold! I look forward to stocking the roadside stand with beautiful fresh cut bouquets this spring and summer season once again!💐
