[Born: March 29, 1939 β Still with us: 2026] π Terence Hill, [Born: October 31, 1929 β Passed: June 27, 2016] π―οΈ Bud Spencer, and [Born: September 17, 1930 β Passed: August 2, 2016] π―οΈ David Huddleston β three men who gave Miami something it never asked for and never forgot β come together in this sun-drenched office scene from Crime Busters (1977): the most cheerfully improbable police recruitment in cinema history. π
In the photograph above, an official Miami police office β framed photographs on the wall, trophies in the cabinet, a telephone on the desk β becomes the setting for a confrontation of magnificent comedy. On the left, Terence Hill as Matt Kirby and Bud Spencer as Wilbur Walsh stand facing the seated authority figure β David Huddleston in his role β the two accidental policemen who walked into a police recruitment office when they meant to rob the supermarket next door, and who somehow emerged wearing badges that the city of Miami will never fully recover from. π«
Two likable losers bungle an armed robbery in a big way β walking into the police recruitment office instead of the supermarket β and in one boneheaded scrape after another, each misstep somehow makes them look more like heroes. π―
Looking at this photograph in 2026, what strikes hardest is not the comedy β though the comedy was perfect β but the warmth. Three men in a Miami office in 1977, fully committed to a scene, fully present to each other, fully alive in every frame. Two of them were taken from the world in the same extraordinary year: Bud Spencer died on June 27, 2016, in Rome, his last word grazie π; David Huddleston died on August 2, 2016, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at 85 π―οΈ β two men, two continents, one summer, both gone.
Terence Hill β silver-haired and warm-eyed in his 2026 photograph, still here at 87 β carries them both forward. β€οΈ
The badge may have been accidental. The friendship was not. The laughter they left behind? That has never clocked out. πβ¨
