It had been an entertaining few days, but I will never complain about rain! ☔️ (Yes, all the cows have a place to get out of the mud)

One of my favorite parts of raising quality calves is watching their individual qualities appear as they grow!

Their coats develop, their bodies change and their personalities become easier to recognize. A curious calf may begin coming closer. A quieter calf may find confidence beside a familiar herd mate.

Those changes give me new reasons to enjoy them at every stage!

The first part of October, we are heading to the Valais National Show with webbcattlecohighlands!

It will be a change of scenery from our own pasture and visit with people we do not get to see every day! I'm super excited to show our sheep and just get a feel for a different animal community.

I plan to take you along as much as I can!

Just sharing a little bit of our work-in-progress! Lots of love and hard work 🥰

Today we worked on halter training in the rain! ☔️(I’m not complaining because we need it!! ) Other than the calves being muddy, they did a great job. Even let me have a photo shoot with them. Rosie is the glam girl- she looks cute and she knows it! Maggie is so sweet it was hard to take her pictures because everytime I squatted down to take them, she was up in my face. 😂 Swagger is a stud!! I wasn’t going to even put the halter on him because he is going to be a bull, but he had fomo! Savage- today was his first day on halter. He wasn’t sure what to think, but he got grain after so that made it all good!

I will ALWAYS share what experience has taught us. If I do not know something, I will ask somebody who does.

Other cattle people did that for Rex and me when we were starting and I hope we can be that kind of place for somebody else too. It's one of the most important things to us.

This is about the time of year when Rex and I start looking at the hay situation and talking about ordering more.

I am not out there making a perfect count of every bale. We look at what we have, how many cattle we will be feeding and how comfortable we feel heading toward a South Dakota winter.

Then we order more before I have a reason to worry about it. 😂

One of my favorite things about raising calves is watching them become more themselves as they grow!

Their personalities start showing up more. You get a better look at their structure. You see how they move through the herd and how they respond when you are working around them.

That is part of why I do not think one picture ever tells you everything about a calf 💕

I love looking back at those first baby pictures and comparing them to the animal standing in front of me a few months later.
