Happy Valentine’s Day! ♥️
What a wild ride it’s been doing this together! There has been a lot of ups and downs over the past few years of learning how to navigate building a business with your spouse but one thing we have learned is there is a time for work and a time for play. We’re thankful everyday that we get to do this together and can’t wait for another season in our residential gardens. Thank you for all of your support over the years, without you we wouldn’t be able to do what we love!

Happy Earth Day! 🌎
Did you know that bees sleep on flowers?

🐝 bees require a temperature of at least 50°F to fly without using up their nectar stores. If the temperature drops below 50, their muscles will become temporarily paralyzed. In the mean time they will find a flowerhead or a deep flower such as a squash blossom where the temperature can be up to 18° warmer close to the nectar source. They will sleep there until their body temperature rises.

🐝 in some species of bees, the males leave the nest a few days after hatching and are not welcome to return. They will spend their lives drinking nectar and searching for a queen to mate with. Their favorite place to sleep is on a flower!

🐝 bees, just like humans, need 5-8 hours of sleep. They achieve this by taking several naps a day.

Passion flowers are so unique! Aside from their stunning beauty, they attract many beneficial pollinators to your garden throughout the summer.

Although USDA hardiness zones 9-11 are ideal for passion fruit, the variety Maypop can grow in zone 7! We had a lot of success growing this in our garden during the 2020/2021 seasons. The flowers are beautiful, the fruit is fun to grow and share and it’s delicious! They have a sweet and sour flavor with edible black seeds. Their flowers and leaves have also been used in teas and tinctures for their calming properties. But beware, they are invasive! We recommend planting them in pots with a trellis since they spread through their root system.

When designing your dream garden there are many things that you need to consider in order to succeed.

The first and most important aspect is sun exposure. Choosing a location with a minimum of 6-8 hours of direct sunlight is best for your summer crops like tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, cucumbers and squash.

Water access is the next most important thing to consider. Without a water source, irrigating the garden will be very difficult. You can either opt to have and irrigation system installed or use a sprayer on your hose to water manually. Your garden can not thrive without sufficient soil moisture.

Finally your choice for soil can make or break your garden. Whether you build raised beds or plant your vegetables and herbs directly into the ground, you soil will only be as good as the amendments you choose to add to it. We use mushroom compost for all of our home gardens.

Another thing to consider is installing a fence. Depending on the area you live in, you may or may not not have critters visiting your garden. If you do, choosing to install a fence might be a great line of defense. If your building a fence to protect your garden from deer, it should be no shorter than 6ft!

How does organic gardening benefit the environment?

For hundreds of years, farmers and gardeners were able to grow anything they wanted without the use of synthetic products. Let’s use their knowledge and wisdom to do the same. With that we can cultivate bountiful gardens while protecting and improving the environment around us.

Organic gardening does not involve the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and fungicides amend their soil, or to fight of pest insects and diseases. One key ingredient in synthetic fertilizers that negatively impact the environment is nitrogen, when mismanaged it can contaminate groundwater and soil. When excess nitrogen is applied to the soil it can runoff into waterways causing many problems for humans and wildlife.

Properly managing the products you use in your garden to help fight pests and disease is critical for maintaining healthy soil and a healthy environment. Remember that healthy food grows from healthy soil! Always choose products that are certified for organic use and eliminate the need to choose any synthetic products. Also, be sure to follow application rates of any product carefully to avoid the leeching of these products.

Why do we use cedar to build our raised beds?

Cedar is naturally rot and insect resistant because of the natural oils in the wood. These properties make it the ideal material for your organic garden projects because it does not need to be treated in order to preserve the wood. Cedar will last around 10-15 years when in contact with your soil and will weather to a silver/grey color providing a wonderful contrast to your thriving garden. Because of its dense grain pattern the boards are less likely to crack, split, shrink or warp making it the best material for the job. While there are many other materials out there that can be used to construct your garden, we prefer the natural beauty and durability of cedar for all of our projects!

What can I plant when it is still cool outside? 🌱

Cool season crops germinate in cold soil and mature with shorter periods of daylight and cooler temperatures. These crops thrive in cooler temperatures making them perfect for spring planting! When the weather gets hot, these crops will likely go to seed and can be pulled out to make room for summer crops.

When planting your garden, it is important to know what to grow and when to grow it. Here in New Jersey we can plant cool season crops twice! Once in spring, and again in autumn. Cool season crops include most of our root vegetables and leafy greens including, carrots, radishes, turnips, beets, spinach, collards, Swiss chard, arugula, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, potatoes, kohlrabi, peas, onions and garlic. We like to grow our crops indoors six to eight weeks before the last frost date, which is approximately April 15th here in zone 7. Be careful of cold snaps that may put your seedlings in danger of frost damage.

What will you be planting this spring? Let us know in the comments below ⬇️

Do you use trellises and arches to maximize your growing space?

Utilizing the vertical space in your garden by trellising your vining crops is a great way to maximize your growing area, allowing you to grow more food!

Not only does it help utilize your garden in a more efficient way, but vertical gardening can also:

• Add beauty & privacy
• Make crop maintenance easier
• Increase sun exposure
• Prevent diseases
• Promote airflow
• Allows for fast and easy harvesting

You can also make use of the shaded areas behind some trellised crops by planting things like herbs and leafy greens that require a little less light and prefer cooler temperatures in the summer. Many common crops like pole beans, tomatoes 🍅, cucumbers 🥒, melons, and some squash can all be grown vertically. What are you going to trellis this season? Leave a comment below 👇 to let us know!
