We’ll it’s official our first bred on farm cow has been confirmed bred. Sere our cow that came to the farm with her calf on the ground she just finally got confirmed by blood test. She will be due Feb 25, 2024 she was bred to a bull that is polled (no horns) and A2/A2 which Sere is also which means 100% chance calf will be A2/A2 milk and the semen was sexed semen so we have a 90% chance Sere will have a heifer (female) calf.

For those of you currently in our herd share we will have decreased milk production starting in November as we will have to dry her off sometime in November (alittle early but she’s been in lactation since Aug of 2022). Then if Mirage and Revlon get pregnant soon we will be totally with out milk for 1 month around mid/end January to 1 week post calving for Sere.

At Harvey Family Homestead we’d like to welcome our new gilt, Miss Tammy Tamworth. She’s a Tamworth, we are soon getting a Mangalitsa boar which we have heard it is the Wagyu of pork nicely marbled and very high in flavor. We will be doing a test litter this fall into winter if it’s as good as they say it is we will be offering our normal market hogs raise on pasture as natural as God intended or our Tamworth/Mangalitsa cross. Pricing may be different if there’s a slower grow out but we will keep you updated on our progress. Along with this change we’ve been experimenting with our pigs getting fed only ground corn and milk from our A2/A2 Jersey milk cows this creates a high quality meat and if this works out the way we are hoping you will see an increase in our meat quality this year. Feeding them this way takes out the soy which if you research has had poor effects on use as humans. So if this works as we hope the quality of taste should go up and the natural effect this has on the meat should also go up.

This morning at 3:47am we welcomed our latest addition to the homestead. Revlon gave birth to a healthy little baby bull calf. He’s gotten latched on momma and gotten colostrum and is doing well. Momma Rev is doing well and being an awesome momma.

Mirage was a god send to this homestead not only did she give us a beautiful little heifer (female) calf that will grow up to give us more milk or make a wonderful little family milk cow for someone else. But Mirage with her baby on her 24/7 gave us 2 gallon of milk today and she’s only just over a week freshened. The quantity will only go up from here. Thank you so much to our wonderful milk herd.
Keep your eyes out for more pictures of baby Emma and one of our other cow will be calving in mid March (fingers crossed with a heifer calf too) and hopefully we will have two pig having litters of piglets in late April.

Here at the homestead has been a busy day we welcomed our first baby calf born on the farm this morning. She now makes the 5th female Jersey milk cow we have on the property. We also have one of the momma cows little steer calf. Everyone is doing great, as long as we can make it through these next few cold days we should be in the clear. Can’t wait to taste mommas milk once she’s through her calf milk period (colostrum and transitional milk). Here a picture of the cute little girl.

Get your freezer full of wonderful pork!!
We have three remaining hogs available for purchase. These are pasture raised never kept indoors always fed fruits, veggies and high quality local feed they have been raise like pigs use to be and taste far better than store bought in my opinion. We have slots scheduled for Oct 3rd and 10th at Phillips Meats in Zanesville. We will deliver the live hog to Phillips during those process dates for slaughter and processing. Please reach out for details.
