Jehovah Jireh Acres We're a small farm that raises Nubian dairy goats, pastured hens, meat rabbits and the bees keep us in honey!

We sell goat milk soap & lotion, pastured eggs, jams & jellies, honey and homemade vanilla extract at our local farmer's markets.

Telling the Bees

We had the privilege of working one of our neighbor's bees recently after he had gone on to glory. I didn't know if anyone had told his bees that he had passed but when we first started cleaning up around the hives, the ladies were not happy to see us. My husband was working on knocking down the weeds and they were all over him. I was back aways getting the tools ready and when he finished with the weeds I told the bees, "Ladies, Jack is gone but we're here to help you now." It might seem crazy, but they settled down after that despite us opening up their hives and moving boxes back in line. My husband doesn't believe me but I believe these old customs became a custom for a reason. The bees know something is different and they just need to know what. So when my time comes, if I still have bees, someone needs to tell them that I've gone and I hope someone will come to help them get ready for winter too.

Bees are becoming a much bigger part of our little farm. We did a cut out this morning from an old hay baler and brought this hive home. The baler is headed to the junkyard so hopefully these ladies will decide our farm is a better home. They are super chill and we'd love to keep these genetics around!
