We wern't kidding when we said, "Sorry, Can't.... I have plans with my pig(s)"

We heard it's National Pork Month!

Those are our months year round, but we are thankful for a month recognizing Pork.

We are proud of the Pork industry
➡️ The strides it's made
➡️ The farmers still keeping those heritage herds going
➡️ Those show hog breeders
➡️ The ones putting the food on the table at every level! Our butchers included!

There are so many important aspects of this industry!

Watering Hole...

These two are in a pen to themselves so I can control breeding rather than in with Sam.

Dory is a Gilt (never been a mom before, usually young)
Maive is a sow (has had at least a litter), but she is on the smaller side, so to make sure Dory had a buddy I pulled her out to house them together.

I used Ferappease Swine on both of them a day or two before introduction.

When we put them together I saw minimal conflicts between the two, way less than normal when you introduce new herds.

If you haven't used Ferappease, and you have multiple hogs, I recommend it!

As barn superintendent of the NEWA Fair, I offered this to all the kids entering into the barn to apply to their hogs. WE ALL NOTICED A HUGE DIFFERENCE! 120 pigs, 90% of the kids said yes to it.
- Boards where only called maybe once or twice
- Much calmer hogs all around
- Those females that went into heat, they still showed signs of heat, but NO AGGRESSION! Would go nose to nose in the ring and then turn away!

It was a huge difference in 2 days of showing, and at load out!

Trust me, you want to add it to your toolbox!

Today is the day! We moved our Boar "Sam" in the big pen with the sows.

We are AI-ing with Shaffers Goldrush and Live Covering with our gentle guy Sam. Sam is a Crossbred Boar (3/4 Hamp 1/4 Berk) from over the mountain in Ione from the Nybergs farm we picked him up last year as a piglet. This is our first year using him and we are pretty excited to see what he helps us accomplish this breeding season.

It's hard to tell in this picture but Sam is a Steel Blue Color and will add mass and bone structure nicely with our sows. His front shoulders are quite impressive!

Thanks again Kara Nyberg and Josh for allowing us to purchase this hog!

Sam and I are doing heat checks this morning, Dory isnt quite ready.

- no standing or "locked in" mode
- Sam didnt give all his indications either or make his masculine smell 😅

We will be breeding her with Shaffers Godrush when Sam and I know she is in "standing heat." We will check again this afternoon.

Switching gears from showing in the ring, to prepping for the next round, little breaks occur when pig farming year round.

We are about to give our 2nd dose of FarrowSure to the breeders, heat cycles are being watched and the time is near to start breeding for those late Winter babies Aka Show Hogs!

It's hard to switch gears, but time doesn't slow down. Here we go.......
