working hard this weekend tilling & prepping for seeding the summer crops.
Also moving kale to the slope of a terrace to maximize space. Kale & collards along with other crops are biennial plants meaning they won’t bolt (seed/flower) for atleast 2 years. This means we’ll be using each plant as much as possible & will hopefully be able to harvest our own kale seed in a year & a half- 2 years. πŸ™πŸ½
Many many wonderful things to come this season. We’re excited to see the garden in full bloom 🌼

This past weekend we worked with an entirely new portion of the garden.
Using a pasture that has been used for livestock for generations, we removed 50+ lbs of hay bale string & netting. Yes, 50+ lbs of JUST string. However, the soil in most of this area was so nutrient dense thanks to the decomposition of hay & probable manure during feeding over the years.
Artichoke & New Zealand Spinach are on the way. πŸ’ͺ🏽

Today I stopped for a brief moment and thought about the profession of farming. For anyone new getting into this arena... you will soon find out that the learning curve is very steep. Farming is an arduous job and one drenched with painstaking rewards if your too stubborn to quit. For the 1% of the population it’s a calling that envelopes our soul. I love this work and I love the challenges that this work throws at me everyday. But as I sit here I see a big problem that is looming over our industry that is being carried on the shoulders of the few. Our older Generation of farmers who make up the majority of farmers in the US are aging fast with not enough replacements to carry the baton towards American Sustainability and freedom. These old farmers have survived the gauntlet of local, national and global melt downs and still put on their boots everyday to do the one thing that most people take for granted. As I sat back today I thought about the billion of hours they collectively put together to put food on the tables of our communities and the wisdom they acquired over the years that will be lost when they pass. This is the sad truth that I have come to realize... their legacy of knowledge is on the brink of extinction and I feel it’s imperative for young farmers like myself to reach out to our aging farmers to listen to their stories and prevent the soil they built through their journey from wasting away and turning to dirt. Our aging farmers are the most valuable amongst us and they deserve our time and attention. I for one Will make it my business to learn from them... especially the techniques from the old ways of doing things and hopefully one day I can be called an Old Farmer myself so I can pass on lessons from our elders to the next Generation. #theoldways #farmers #handsinthedirt #knowyourfarmer

as we prep for spring seeding, we’re also continuing maintenance for our small forest we call home. 🌟
For us, this includes old waste removal & maintaining our plant life. Some of the trees are very much over grown with brush & vines.... ultimately smothering the trees & preventing them from receiving proper amount of sunlight/nutrients. 🌞
Removing deciduous vines allows the tree to transport sugars & other nutrients down the trunk to the roots, preventing a slow death of starvation & thirst.
Vines reaching the tree top canopy can block almost all sunlight from reaching the tree. The blockage of sunlight prevents the tree from photosynthesizing ultimately resulting in death of the tree. -> which also means less oxygen being distributed into the environment. πŸ’”

If you have trees or even a forest, I encourage you to play your part in environmental conservation by participating in small tasks like this!
Have a larger job you’d like done? Brush removal &/or tree removal? Direct message us or @varnumtreeremoval for a free estimate for the job.

Many of you might know one of our missions as a family & business is being Earth friendly!
This means we are grateful for days full of rain like today.
Playing our part in #savingearth means practicing water conservation. We allow our plants to thrive naturally, only watering during droughts & very high temperatures.
Today is Geneva’s heavenly birthday! Help us celebrate by taking your house plants outside to be watered by the rain. 😊

Where are our carrot lovers?
Did you know.. carrots were most commonly found in red, purple, white & yellow until the 16th century? Cultivators crossed red and yellow carrots, creating the orange carrot we know today. :)
