We had to finish the season with a good one… so this week we’re having Homemade Pizza Night! 🍕

This week’s Farm Basket includes:

From fresh dough and homemade sauce to the first little tastes of fall, I couldn’t think of a better basket to wrap up our weekly season. 🩵

And while the weekly baskets are finished, the Farm Baskets aren’t going anywhere! Beginning in October, they’ll return the first week of every month, with both our $25 Base Basket and a new Build-a-Basket option.

I have SO many things planned for the cooler months — seasonal produce, preserves, fresh breads and baked goods, soups, casseroles, candles, simmer pots and probably a few things I haven’t even thought of yet. 😂

A huge thank you to everyone who participated in our Farm Baskets this season. Every basket supports our little homestead, other local growers when I supplement our harvest with theirs, and helps us continue caring for the rescued roosters who call K***s Hill home. 🐓🩵

Weekly baskets may be over, but there’s LOTS more coming from K***s Hill — we’re just changing with the seasons. 🍂

🧺 This Week’s Farm Baskets 🍎

We may still be in August, but this week’s baskets are definitely starting to taste a little like fall! 🍂

This week our subscribers are getting rainbow farm-fresh eggs, butternut squash, apples, zucchini and bell peppers — plus a recipe for roasted butternut squash & apples. 😋

And from the K***s Hill kitchen: Cinnamon Apple Scones and TWO little gourmet popcorn samplers — small-batch caramel made with homemade caramel and white cheddar. 🍿

I’m letting my basket customers be the official taste testers this week, so we’ll see which popcorn wins! 😂

A little farm-fresh, a little homemade, and a whole lot of good stuff packed into one basket. ❤️

Everything we’ve been taught about chickens falls apart in moments like this.

Dusty wasn’t alone. In fact, this has become something we’ve come to expect.

Whenever someone is sick enough to need a crate, it isn’t unusual to find others gathered around them. They sit nearby. They look in. They stay close. After seeing it happen again and again, we’ve stopped being surprised by it. It’s simply what they do.

Because a flock isn’t just a group of chickens sharing the same space. It’s a community. A place where friendships are formed, relationships matter, and individuals notice when someone they care about isn’t okay.

All too often, we’re introduced to chickens through transport trucks on the highway, windowless barns, grocery store shelves, classrooms, and children’s books that teach us what sound they make but almost nothing about who they are. We’re taught what they produce, what they’re used for, and what they can “give” us.

Rarely are we taught about their friendships, their families, their social lives, their curiosity, their intelligence or their capacity to care for one another.

When that’s the story you’ve always known, a photo like this feels surprising, but it shouldn’t.

Chickens form friendships. They have favorite companions. They seek one another out. They notice when someone is missing and when someone they’re bonded to is hurting, they often do exactly what you’re looking at here. They stay close.

The heartbreaking part isn’t that chickens are capable of friendship. It’s that so many of us were taught they aren’t.

Because once we convince ourselves that someone doesn’t feel deeply, doesn’t form relationships, doesn’t care whether another member of their community is safe…It becomes much easier to justify confining them by the thousands, separating families, treating them as production instead of individuals, and overlooking the emotional lives they have always had.

The chickens never changed. They’ve been quietly showing us who they are all along. Everything we’ve been taught about chickens doesn’t fall apart because this is unusual.

It falls apart because this is who they’ve always been. ❤️

Feel Good Friday!

Meet our 2 newest boys, Clifford and Snoop 🐓

We rescued several boys this past year. Once we got everyone settled we watched to see who may need more girls with them. In April we brought in 24 chicks plus 6 who were aging out and being picked on in a local farm store. We had 4 young boys plus a 5th senior boy we knew we wanted some girls for.

Any time we bring in female chicks to raise we always plan for the inevitable accidental boys. Before chicks even arrive we think about where they may fit in amongst our other flocks. We also always have a plan B, meaning we’re prepared to create a new space if needed.

As we all know, unless you choose autosexing or sex-linked chicks (and even then mistakes happen) or adopt older pullets, you have at least a 10% chance of receiving males. It’s imperative to be prepared ahead of time.

We decided to keep Snoop and Clifford together along with 7 of the females in a new space. For now Snoop (the bcm) is clearly the alpha while Clifford (blrw) is quite content to just be. Their coop is 4x10 and their run space is 6x50’. This gives this flock of 9 a little more than 33 square feet each to roam about in. They have an umbrella and additional space under the raised coop for shade, protection and a dust bath and when it gets a little cooler we will add a crepe Myrtle and also a blueberry bush. We’ll continue to watch to assure the boys get along and make changes if needed.

These sweet little “accidents” couldn’t have landed in a better place and we’re happy to have them here with us 🙂🩵🐓
