Honey Bee Removal #2 for the day and #32 for the year kept us right here in Newton, NC!

While heading home from our first removal of the day, we were contacted about another suspected colony just a few minutes away. Since we had wrapped up our first project a little ahead of schedule, we were happy to stop by and take a look!

Once we gained access, we found a truly impressive colony tucked away inside the garage. These ladies were absolutely massive! The colony stretched nearly 5 feet across and contained enough bees to comfortably fill a 10-frame deep hive body.

After carefully removing the comb and bees, we located this beautiful queen and secured her for transport. With Queeny safely accounted for, the rest of the colony was collected and prepared for relocation to one of our apiaries.

Once the removal was complete, we sealed everything back up and cleaned the area so thoroughly that you’d never know we had been there.

Two removals, two queens secured, and two colonies given a new home—all in the same day right here in Newton, NC!

Honey Bee Removal #1 for the day and #31 for the year, brought us closer to home in Newton, NC at a brand-new event venue!

These ladies had taken up residence inside one of the stone pillars at the event barn. Unfortunately, stinging insects tend to make poor wedding guests, so they had to be safely relocated before the venue opened its doors.

We wasted no time getting to work, carefully removing the stone façade to expose the colony. Once we gained access, we found a small but beautiful, docile group of honey bees tucked away inside.

After removing all of the comb, we located Queeny herself and secured her for transport. With the queen safely contained, the rest of the colony was collected and prepared for relocation where they can continue thriving in a more suitable home.

Another successful removal, another colony saved, and one less wedding crasher for the happy couples of Newton!

Today’s honey bee removal took us to Kings Mountain, NC! This marks structural removal number 30 for the year!

We found these ladies nestled within the floor joist system beneath one of the upstairs bedrooms. Fortunately, the flooring was laminate and came apart with ease, allowing us to access the colony with minimal disruption.

The homeowner reported seeing a swarm the week prior, so we weren’t expecting this colony to still be queenright. Once we opened the cavity and flipped the comb over, our suspicions were confirmed. There was no open brood present, and we found nearly 10 capped queen cells throughout the colony.

We caught them just in time! Any longer and we likely would have had multiple virgin queens emerging and competing for control of the hive.

We quickly removed and relocated these leaderless ladies, then got to work sealing up the structure to prevent future occupants from moving in.

Best of all, everything went back together so cleanly that it looked as if we were never there.

These bees have been donated to our nearby friends, Brianna and Jake, who will be giving them a new home and caring for them in their apiary moving forward.

Today’s honey bee removal adventure took us to an old railroad town called Central, South Carolina.

When we originally got the call, we were told the bees were in Central, SC. We immediately asked the customer to narrow it down a little more… not realizing Central was actually the name of the town! 😂😂

Once we got that figured out, we made our way down and found these ladies tucked neatly behind a piece of plywood that had been used to board up an old window.

Thankfully, access was about as easy as it gets. It was a beautiful colony full of mild-tempered bees that made for a pleasant removal.

Unfortunately, as we got deeper into the colony, we discovered they were hopelessly queenless with strong evidence of laying workers throughout the hive. In most situations, that would spell trouble for a colony, but these girls caught a lucky break.

We’ll be bringing them back to Conover and combining them with a weaker queenright colony, giving them a second chance and boosting another hive at the same time.

After all the comb was removed and everything was buttoned back up, we took some time to enjoy a little local flavor—grabbing some Mexican food and ice cream from a couple of the local shops before making the trip back home.

Just another day of saving bees, helping homeowners, and discovering new places across the Carolinas! 🐝

Today’s honey bee removal adventure took us to the Kings Creek area of Caldwell County where these ladies had built themselves quite the colony condo tucked away inside the floor joist system of this home.

Access from below was extremely limited, so this one called for a full top-down approach. That unfortunately meant opening up some beautiful hardwood flooring, but thankfully the homeowner’s family does hardwood flooring by trade, so they understood exactly what needed to happen to get the colony removed properly and prevent future issues.

Once we got everything opened up, we were met with a very healthy, sizable colony with plenty of comb and activity. We carefully worked through the joist cavity, removed the bees, secured the queen, and cleaned the area out thoroughly before putting everything back together.

Now all that’s left is installing some fresh hardwood and this home will be good as new!

Another successful live honey bee removal completed, and these ladies were safely relocated to one of our apiaries where they’ll continue pollinating and thriving. 🐝

Are you a beekeeper looking to expand your apiary? Have you recently been contacted about a honey bee hive in a house that will require a cutout?

Cutouts and structural honey bee removals are a completely different side of beekeeping — and honestly, they’re not for everyone. Colonies living inside homes and structures are often unpredictable, defensive, and far more difficult to manage than your typical apiary hive. Without the proper experience, equipment, and repair knowledge, these removals can quickly become overwhelming and lead to a sloppy job and an unhappy homeowner or business owner.

That’s where we come in.

At Foothills Bee Company, we specialize in complex structural honey bee removals throughout North Carolina and parts of South Carolina. If you come across a colony that’s beyond your comfort level, give us a call and if it’s within our travel distance we’ll come handle the removal for you.

As a thank you for the referral, we’ll gladly offer the colony back to you whenever possible so you can continue growing your apiary without taking on the risks of a difficult structural removal. 🐝
