Caught a swarm the easy way; they moved into the barn and settled on some hive bodies. I began setting up a hive above the swarm and they slowly moved in. Two days later they have settled into their new home.

We are giving mushroom logs a try this year. They were inoculated with sh*take and blue oyster spores last fall. But since it's been so dry this spring, should I water them down occasionally?

We are giving mushroom logs a try. Inoculated them last fall with sh*take and blue oysters, hopefully will have mushrooms sometime this year. But, it's been unusually dry. Should I water the logs occasionally?

We're giving mushroom logs a try. Sh*take and Oyster mushrooms. Inoculated them last fall and put them in the shade under some trees. It's been unusually dry this spring as we are 3" behind on rain. Should I water the logs and get some moisture on and around them?

Two days ago it was 73 degrees F and the bees were bringing in nectar and pollen. They are raising brood and consuming the last of their winter stores. Last night it was 24 degrees. We will have food ready for them as soon as it's warm enough to open the hives.

All our hives have lived through the winter which is wonderful. The news is not good nationally with an expected 40% mortality rate for hives coming out of winter. March is the critical month to keep them alive, March is the month they often starve to death. You can see in the video that some of the bees have pollen baskets attached to their legs. Pollen is protein. That means they are brooding up, and that means they'll eat through their food stores much faster. While pollen is plentiful, nectar is not. So, this hive is getting another sugar block. Sugar is carbohydrates, their energy source. It's not as good as nature's nectar, but better than starving three weeks before spring arrives.

End of season evaporator steam cleaning with tap water.

Drawing syrup off the evaporator. It's no longer sap when it reaches 7.25 degrees F over the boiling point of water. We carefully watch the thermometer while doing the draw off. The syrup goes through the filter and prefilter shown, then it moves into the kitchen for more filtering and a final check before bottling.

This small evaporator does about 16.5 gallons of sap per hour. We can push it to 18 gph if we are real attentive. It's the right size for us. It takes roughly 50 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup.

Then it warmed up and we got busy.
