Well the chills of winter are starting to set in. My Christmas cactus’s are budding or blooming.
Making room in the house for some of my more fragile plants to spend the next couple of months in.
I still have lots of starter plants for sale, and I will be getting new plants ready for when the Ridgeville Farmers Market opens in the spring.
I have Aloe Vera, Jades, Christmas Cactus, Hens & Chicks, Spider Plants, Ferns, Ivy’s, Philodendrons, and others...... All well rooted and ready to be transplanted in to your beautiful planters.
Makes for a great, inexpensive gift for the Holidays!
All my plants are priced to sell at just $2, $4, or $6 each.

As we approach the middle of October it’s time we start thinking about cool weather crops. Carrots, lettuce, peas, radishes, etc.....
Herbs such as oregano, thyme, mint, etc... also do well around here this time of the year.
I have plenty of starter indoor/outdoor plants for sale cheap.
I also have self watering Herb kits of oregano, basil, and mint & self watering germinating trays. I even have some cool weather seeds available.

I just got in some new self watering germination kits. Great for starting seeds, or growing micro greens. Just add water, set it by a sunny window or grow light, and give it a few days. You don’t need to worry about over watering or forgetting that you hadn’t watered lately.
It’s also a great way to introduce children to gardening.
I will include micro green salad mix seeds with each order free. A mixture of kale, arugula, basil, broccoli, red cabbage, and cauliflower. Spicy salad mix also includes giant mustard, & kohlrabi seeds. This makes a complete grow kit. Each salad (basic or spicy) kit = $12, self watering tray alone = $10

Today starts the Ridgeville’s Farmers Market Movie Madness.
In addition to all of the vendors, & the food trucks that will be there showing off all of their fine products (including yours truly), we will be showing the movie “The Goonies”.
Great wholesome fun for the whole family to enjoy!
Along with my starter plants I will be selling various garden seeds, & grow kits for herbs and micro greens.

The Ridgeville Farmers Market will be open this Sunday from 10AM - 2PM. Come see all the stuff!!!
In addition to my very reasonably priced starter plants I will have a few plants in nice clay pots w/saucers for just a few dollars more.
Also there will be some fresh picked, organic spring garlic at a great price based on size.
Come get some while they last as I expect things to go quick now that the beautiful weather has arrived.

Finally, the Ridgeville Farmers Market is getting underway this Sunday from 10AM - 2PM.
What a great way to spend a little bit of your Mother’s Day, out in the beautiful sunshine, looking at all of the local vendors & their wares.
I will be there with all of my starter plants for $1,$2,&$3 each. I will also have some more expensive plants in nicer pots for those folks that want something w/o having to transplant it.

Lately we’ve been down at the North Charleston’s Farmers Market selling fresh herbs, veggies, and plants. You can find us there every Thursday from 3-7PM through the end of October.

New at The Farm, patio gardens.
5 Gallon buckets with Tomato, Peppers, or Eggplant along with Basil, Oregano, & Thyme Herbs. Great for making those homemade sauces & dishes. Put a couple in the back and watch the mosquitos disappear. The herbs naturally repel most biting insects.
Great for patios, dorms, apartments. Etc....
They make great housewarming gifts too.

For the upcoming Holidays, The Farm is building Lucky Bamboo Plants. Representing “Happiness, Wealth, & Luck” the Lucky Bamboo plant has 3 shoots of varying height in a 4” clay pot with water tray.
In keeping with the Feng Shui philosophy of harmonization these plants are in earth tone pots. And can be either indoor or outdoor plants. If planted outdoors the bamboo should reach about 10ft in height

The new batch of Sweet Basil is getting stronger, another couple of weeks and it’ll be ready for picking!!!
Meanwhile we’re just getting ready to inoculate a batch of Pink Oyster Mushrooms. A first for us at The Farm so we are looking forward to getting them under way.

Pearl Oyster growth day 3 on the sawdust block. Looking good, should be ready to harvest in the next day or two. The pinning on the right side of the mound is also beginning to produce an good size cluster as well. We are much happier with the performance of the sawdust block when compared to straw logs. A night and day difference. Let’s see if we can reproduce the same results on another block?

Well we’ve moved over from straw logs to sawdust mounds to grow our mushrooms by. The logs just didn’t produce with the type of consistency and quantity we had been hoping for. Our first sawdust mound seems to be living up more to our expectations. The pinning below indicates where and how much mushrooms will be produced. Looking really good!

It looks like we are getting a little better at understanding mushroom growing. Our latest attempt at growing Blue Oyster Mushrooms has had some of our best growth to date. The ends are a bit curled right now because of too much CO2 in the room. Some added ventilation will straighten that right out.
New pinning on another log indicates that we are getting the "timing" of the mushroom growth in to a cycle we can control

Ok, the new sweet Basil has been planted. A couple more weeks and we should be back in stock with sweet Basil leaves.
We also saw our first clusters of Blue Oyster Mushrooms (not as much as we had hoped for but a start nonetheless.)

On top of the unfortunate blight that's taken over our sweet Basil, Hurricane Irma has also pitched in with all that rain and drowned a number of plants. The good news is that the initial framing for the new greenhouse is finished. We'll be looking to get the rest up soon. We will keep you updated as that progresses.

Well we had our first set back at "The Farm". A fungus common to this area took about 40 Sweet Basil plants. The recent days of high humidity coupled with the higher temperatures make Basil plants (especially Sweet Basil) very susceptible to this common fungus. It's OK though, we managed to save a dozen or so plants, and there are already more in the works

Lime Basil Pesto | Modern Steader

This pesto is good enough to stand alone with crackers. A real head turner!

Lime basil pesto tastes familiar but surprisingly different at the same time. Pair it with pasta, top a panini, or as a dip for crackers.

Spicy Globe Basil has a very different flavor than Sweet or Genovese Basil. But it is still used in sauces, soups, pesto, garnishes, and baking.
That's right, I said baking! There are a number of Basils (Lemon, Lime, Cinnamon, etc....) that add a fantastic flavor to baked goods such as tarts & cookies, while still others taste great in jellies & jams.
We have Spicy Globe Basil ready and will be picked in the next couple of days. PM if interested in a ounce or two to try in your own recipes

Microgreens are greens grown and picked while very young when their flavor is the freshest. These greens can be kale, lettuces, basils, broccoli, mustards, cabbages, arugula, and more.....
"The Farm" grows 2 types of microgreen salad mixes, Basic & Spicy.
Our basic microgreen salad mix has kale, broccoli, red cabbage, and others.
This mix is great for salads & sandwiches.
While our Spicy salad mix has other greens in addition to our basic, such as mustard greens & arugula making this salad mix spicy yet tasty.
