Meet our newest crew member! Fiona is a naturalist & artist making her debut in the farming world! She has a degree in Natural Resource Management and has been in WNC for 5 years. They are passionate about connecting people to their environment through food, curiosity, and healing. The way she moves through the world with empathy and respect for all creatures is admirable. We're all so thrilled to have them on our a team, but Clover is especially delighted ☺️🌱🦎

Move tarp -> broadfork -> spread compost -> plant plants/sow seeds -> cover with frost cloth -> set up irrigation to water -> wait -> replant/reseed -> wait -> w**d -> wait... -> harvest
This is what we've been doing since mid-february, along with w**d whacking, setting up fencing and generally getting our metaphorical ducks in a row. We are in the dot-dot-dot, beds are mostly prepped, fields more than half planted, now we wait but not for too much longer. Our first harvest is right around the corner. Sugar snap peas, lettuce, garlic scapes, cilantro, radishes, dill, and broccolini are going to be on a market table so very very soon.

With a turn of the dial, we begin again. A new year, a new season. We say goodbye to the Year of the Snake and enter into the Year of the Horse.
We are leveling up in a huge way this season and are delighted to announce it.
Our farm has doubled in size! We got the opportunity to lease a Β½ acre on the edge of Little Tennessee River, just downstream of the Cowee Mound. With slight trepidation and lots of trusting, we signed the lease, made a crop plan, and placed the tarps. Ideally this means we will yield more subsistence crops (like sweet potatoes and winter squash) than ever before. Getting to our core desire of feeding the community, human cannot subsist on lettuce alone!
In order to fulfill this labor of love we enlisted the help of my dear, badass cousin (who gets all the credit for inspiring me to farm in the first place). So let's introduce y'all! Jillian (they/them), is coming from central maine and has over a decade of farming experience! They've been working on an organic mixed veggie farm for the last few years and is looking forward to a smaller scale operation and a new climate. They love all veggies almost equally, but a top contender would probably be fennel. Get ready to say hi to them at market!

The turkey is an unparalleled gift that keeps on giving! We had the most delicious brined turkey on the table for turkey day, but I have to admit I was more excited by the prospect of making broth for turkey pho. I cooked up one batch plain, and then another concentrated with seasonings. When I went to combine them I was so delighted with the jiggly, collegen-rich, jelly gold that I had made. 10+ quarts are going into the freezer to pair with noodles, herbs, lime, chili oil and the rest of the meat. Oh my, oh my... I'm thrilled that my winter arc is going to be filled with turkey pho! So much gratitude for Alex and Katie Doe πŸ’“ πŸ¦ƒ 🍲

Squash!! My first seed saving endeavor. I've been tending to this strain of butternut x Seminole pumpkin for 5 years now. Very happy with the results this year. Give it two more years and the genetics will be stable and a new variety of squash is born, Butterkin. There's so much to tell about this relationship and there's so much more to come, but for now I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the rest of the fruit sets can ripen despite the leaves getting nipped by frost.
