If I somehow figured out how to source beef from Brazil and lower my prices a tick, would any of you guys think that was a good idea?

One housekeeping note: I won’t be able to ship beef this coming Monday because UPS is closed. I should be back on schedule the following Monday.

In case you missed it…

Trump announced he was going to lower the price of ground beef a bit by bringing in more cheap, lower-quality beef from overseas.

I can see all the smiling faces now, so glad they saved a buck while eating lower-quality foreign beef.

Just to clarify…

Folks who buy our beef are literally willing to pay a little extra because they want BETTER beef.

I’m sorry, I’m still shaking my head in disbelief.

“Thank you, Mr. President, for sending me a worse product that costs a little less.”

My guess is the folks happiest about this are the big fast-food joints who just improved their bottom line…

while adding to everyone else’s bottom line.

Sorry. I couldn’t help but go there.

As parents we are called to teach our children what they need to hear.

Culture, social media, and now AI are also speaking to our children—and largely telling them what they want to hear.

We are pretty intentional as parents about silencing those voices.

Of course, I can’t shelter my kids forever. Nor would I want to.

My goal is to prepare them to enter the world strong, mature, and full of integrity—to teach them the right path while I still have the opportunity, and believe that when they are old they will not depart from it.

De-poop the coop.

That’s what we call this chore.

It’s hot, dusty, dirty… and somehow still satisfying.

Today I heard comments like:

“Look how big this scoop is!”

“I just scraped a road through the chicken poop!”

It got me thinking.

If I gave these kids a choice between sitting inside where it’s cool playing video games or coming out here to shovel chicken manure… which do you suppose they’d choose?

Probably the video games.

But which experience is more valuable?

And which one are they more likely to remember 30 years from now?

Who remembers that random afternoon they sat inside watching TV?

I suspect they’ll remember working beside their brothers and sisters, laughing, complaining a little, and accomplishing something that mattered.

Hard work isn’t always fun while you’re doing it.

But it often becomes one of the sweetest memories later.

And don’t worry… these kids and I washed up thoroughly before we packed anyone’s beef box!

I hear folks suggesting that what we need is more self-focus… more “me time.”

But when I think about my wife, family and friends, I try to imagine erasing them and replacing them with some material possession or short-term pleasure.

I can’t think of anything I’d trade them for.

Anybody else think that, for most people, becoming more self-centered isn’t going to make life better in the long run?

We aren’t able to help a lot of customers—but we try to help our few customers a lot.

We recognize our customers by name. We answer the phone ourselves. We personally reply to emails.

When something goes wrong—like a shipping delay that causes beef to spoil—we don’t hide behind fine print. We personally stand behind what we sell because that’s what we’d want someone to do for our family.

Every so often someone tells us we should be cheaper than the grocery store. The reality is that we can’t compete with corporations that process thousands of cattle a day and operate at a scale we never will.

Our children help on the farm because it’s how they learn responsibility and stewardship, but we’re never going to match the economics of industrial food production.

What we can do is offer something different.

We can build real relationships with the families who trust us to feed theirs.

Get married. Have kids.

Learn to love teaching them, working alongside them, and praying with them.

Expect to be frustrated. Your children will lie, argue, test boundaries, and act selfishly. And you’ll be tempted to respond with anger, pettiness, and selfishness of your own.

Good things are hard.

We raise cattle and provide families with beef, but that priority always comes after raising our own children in the way they should go.

My hope is this encourages some young families. Twenty or thirty years from now, we won’t be wondering how much money we made. We’ll be looking at our children and seeing what all those ordinary days added up to.
