Fall is officially in the air and your flock can feel it. 🐓🍂

Shorter days and cooler temps change what your chickens need from their feed, and October is the month a lot of backyard keepers start noticing the difference in egg production without knowing exactly why.

As fall sets in, cool-season grasses can actually spike in nonstructural carbohydrates, especially on cold nights followed by sunny days. For most horses this is not a problem. But for horses that are insulin-resistant, prone to laminitis, or easy keepers, October pasture can be one of the riskiest times of year.

The visual cues that usually signal danger in spring, lush green growth, rapid flush, don't apply the same way in fall. The grass can look sparse and dried out while still carrying elevated sugar levels.

The leaves turn. The air gets that bite to it. The horses grow their coats out and start moving differently, slower in the mornings, more settled in the evenings.

There is something about this season that reminds you the farm has its own rhythm and you're just lucky enough to be part of it.

If you're running a mixed flock of chickens, ducks, or other poultry, fall is a good time to take a look at whether your current feed program is actually working for everyone in that yard. 🐔🦆

Different birds have genuinely different nutritional needs and what works well for one species can create gaps for another. Ducks, for example, need more niacin than chickens and can suffer without it over time.

As daylight drops and temperatures shift, nutritional demands change too. It's worth a quick conversation before winter sets in and problems are harder to spot. 🙌

Did you know? Young horses going into their first winter have significantly higher energy needs per pound of body weight than mature horses do.🐴

Growing horses are doing two things at once: maintaining body temperature in cooling weather and continuing to develop bone, muscle, and connective tissue. Both of those things require fuel, and the nutritional gap between what pasture and hay provide and what a growing horse actually needs can widen quickly once temperatures drop.

Weanlings and yearlings that look fine in October can lose ground fast in November and December if their feed program isn't keeping up with demand. 🌾

And the cows who carried them, birthed them, and fed them through the whole season are still right there, steady as ever.

There's a lot of quiet, consistent work that goes into a moment like this. Most of it never gets seen or celebrated.

Dogs that are active on a farm, whether they're herding, guarding, or just covering a lot of ground daily, burn significantly more calories than the average house pet and have higher protein and fat requirements to support that output.

If your farm dog is on the same bag of food as a dog that spends most of its time on a couch, it might be worth a second look. 👀

The animals that come out of winter in great shape are almost always the ones whose people made the right calls in fall. Body condition checks. Feed adjustments. Mineral programs reviewed before the cold arrives.

It doesn't have to be complicated. It just has to happen now rather than later.
