This ewe will probably be one of those animals that will forever leave a space in my heart. She’s so sweet and generous. She lost her ewe lamb this season and we decided to milk her. She’s milked once a day and give us her all, along with scratches and affections as a token of thanks from us to her ❤️

🥛 Milking update!

We’re officially done lambing, and I’ve chosen four ewes to milk this season. We’re now six weeks into once-a-day milking while still lamb-sharing, except for one ewe who sadly lost her lamb at birth.

Even with this setup, I’m getting about half a gallon of milk each day—and it adds up fast! So far, we’ve had plenty for fresh milk, homemade yogurt, and ice cream for our large family. It’s so rewarding to see these girls helping keep our fridge stocked! 🐑❤️

🌺 featured is sheep yogurt with our garden fresh strawberries and mint🌺

We are 2 weeks into milking our clun forest sheep and it’s been honestly going better than I expected. Lots of built up worries and anxieties just work their way out when you just go for it and give it to Our Creator. I am super please with getting a quart a day from 2 ewes that I’m still lamb sharing with, and milking just once a day. The milk is so delicious-liquid vanilla ice cream taste-and look at those nutrient comparisons! I was drowning in milk when we had a dairy cow. Don’t get me wrong, I had a dream cow and am so happy for the experience we learned, but this better suits our family’s needs. Plus, you can’t deny the superiority of sheep’s milk in almost every vitamin and mineral value.

When dad is a little banged up and can’t keep the farm running at full speed… well, that only means one thing around here:

🚨 ALL HANDS ON DECK 🚨

And by “all hands,” we mean all hands… big, small, and barely-out-of-bed-this-morning hands 😂

Even the tiniest farm hands are clocking in, stepping up, and putting in some serious work. Might not be the fastest crew we’ve ever had, and there may be more snack breaks than usual… but the job’s getting done one way or another 💪

Truth is, this is what farm life is all about—pitching in, working together, and raising kids who know how to show up when it matters.

Plus, let’s be honest… it’s pretty cute watching the backup crew try to run the show 🐑🚜

Well… today we planted what might officially be the sheep’s version of a 5-star buffet.

Got our cover crop mix in the ground, and if you read the tag it sounds less like seed and more like a gourmet menu—oats, barley, peas, clovers, brassicas, sunflowers, buckwheat… I’m pretty sure if we added a little dressing, we could serve it at the dinner table.

Huge shoutout to the folks at Walnut Creek Seeds for helping us put this mix together. They did a great job building something that checks all the boxes for both soil health and livestock nutrition.

Now on the serious side… this mix is doing a lot more than just “growing green stuff.”

🌱 It’s working the soil from every angle—breaking up compaction, fixing nitrogen, feeding microbes, and building organic matter.

🐑 And down the road, it turns into high-quality forage for the flock. A little bit of everything means a better-balanced diet, and that shows up in healthier sheep.

So while it might look like we just planted a random salad out in the field… there’s a whole lot of purpose behind it.

Now we wait for rain—and try to keep the sheep from asking when the buffet opens. 🌧️🐑🌿 🐑 🐑

Day 4 - consistency is key! Habit forming and routine are essential to making this work! Production has doubled (ha! Still just milked 4 oz but that’s twice as much as day 1), Evie is less scared of the stanchion and more excited about her grain treat.

Some things to note here: Evie is a first time momma therefore her production and udder size are substantially smaller than her elders. Evie only has one lamb, which also naturally tells the body there isn’t as much need for production right from the start. She’s only been in milk for one week and she is still with her lamb 24/7.

Huge bonus—As I work with Evie, her ewe lamb is also being trained. She walks right up in the stanchion with mom, gets human interaction and gets familiar with this routine.

Next mission- milking #276 with her twin ewes. Today I got her on the stanchion with babies and let her eat some grain while just barely touching her udders. Baby steps!

Just shy of 2 ounces you will see here. This 2 oz was curated carefully through a wrestling match with our beloved ewe Evelyn aka #001. Yes, the first clun forest born on our farm. There may be remnants of sheep pellets on my knees and my back is gonna feel it later but hey, at least there were no hooves in this milk.

In all seriousness, once her lamb is big enough to separate her at night, I think this amount will increase and there is a descent amount of withholding going on right now too. But I’m all about transparency and this is where we started. I have high hopes for smoother transitions in the future but you have to start somewhere!
