This is a story of the Lord’s provision, and of turning all things to our good.
You may look at this and think it’s just random pictures of weekly dinner, and in part, that’s true. But this is so much more than that.
We have been on the fence about what to do in recent weeks, as we had an extremely mean rooster and weren’t exactly sure how to proceed. I’m quite tender hearted, and honestly kept holding out that Mr Rooster may just suddenly be nice. But alas, he kept tormenting us all. He would chase my poor boys every chance he got, and run at me when I was clear across the yard. It got so bad that we had to discontinue the flock free ranging for a while until we decided what to do. I
The time finally came where we had no choice but to get rid of him. As mean as he had gotten, he would have been stew if we sold him anyways…so Adam did what had to be done. It was his first time processing a chicken, and he did great! It was my frost time prepping a roo to eat, so with the advice of good friends, I put him in a salt brine. I then cooked the roo in a crock pot, and saved the broth. Cut up all the chicken, and separated it out into two. Put the bones back in with some veggies and cooked a second time to make a veggie/bone broth. Took the larger portion of the chicken and made chicken max and broccoli, and the other portion to make chicken, veggie (veggies from my garden and mom’s) and cheese empanadas. Tonight, I’m using some of the broth in a third meal…cheeseburger soup. And I still have more broth in the fridge. So in all, that roo was a part of feeding our family for 3 meals so far…with more broth still to go to nourish us.
We overcame our fears and did what had to be done, and through that, the Lord provided food for us in a big way! This is another example too of how you can find ways to use up all of something to practice frugality. 🩷
I’m thankful for that roo that the Lord provided, and on a strange way, even thankful that he ended up going on his reign of terror. He taught us a lot and through it, we learned new skills and were fed well. I’m grateful.
