Broad Meadow Farm

Broad Meadow Farm A small hobby farm that breeds Colorado Mountain Dogs, sells eggs, and Nigerian Dwarf Goats in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. Isaiah 30:23

Our family of 4 own a small hobby farm in the Northwoods of Wisconsin that focuses on Colorado Mountain Dogs, Nigerian Dwarf Goats, a whole bunch of crazy chickens, and 4 very chatty guineas. However, before everything comes God, and His deep love for us.

I haven’t posted much this summer but we have had so much going on! The last week we have had Glory, Caliber, and Ranger go to their new farms and families, I learned our little Lue (blueberry) loves to pick berries, and Liberty is getting a darker tan patch on her tail like her Mama. We have also had time up north at our cabin sitting in the hammock, 4 wheeling, and having s’mores. Caleb has been playing in the dirt and building food plots. Charlie started a competitive sport - mountain biking - she’s definitely still my adrenaline j***y! I’ve been prepping for coaching soccer - secret sister anyone? And Hazel has been practicing like a crazy girl to get ready for her season in U15!! 🫣

Also, Estelle has learned she loves the family dog life, and sharing food and snuggling with the cats. One of my chickens (*ahem* Honey…) doesn’t like when I work on the computer. Our cat thinks she’s a chicken.

This next week our family is adventuring out on our family vacation… maybe I’ll remember to post some pictures 🫣

I got a text last night from the owner of Goose, now Bitzer. It is incredible to watch how he is growing too! Gail has taken our goofy boy and has been raising him into an incredible guardian for her flock of sheep, and seeing these pictures is an incredible gift to me.

From the first few days until now this boy is remarkable. I can’t wait to see what all of our other pups do, and where they go!

(I also love seeing Bitzer with his pack member, Humbly, she is the perfect fit for him!

PS. We have 5 pups still hanging around here with mom and dad 💜

Sorry I went dark for a while! Our family has been adjusting to some big changes, and I tend to go quiet when making these adjustments, I have a tendency to cocoon when big changes happen. 🦋

First change? We moved across town to a home that is a better fit for our family, and is closer to town for the sake of life. Moving with animals AND a litter of pups is a ton of work, and as of last week, we are 100% moved over. We officially finished deep cleaning the 100+ year old barn, and the chicken coop. 🏡

Second change: We sold our goats and are focusing on poultry only at the moment. Goats are not my favorite, cows are… so when trying to substitute cows with goats, it just doesn’t work mouth. My favorite response to why we don’t have goats is: because goats aren’t cows. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 🐮

Third change: this one should have been announced right after it happened, but it was too difficult to post… our old hound, Smokey, passed away. Gosh, it’s strange not having him around! It’s definitely a lot quieter 🫣 but also a lot less silly. This has been a huge change for us because he was a part of nearly every aspect of our lives. We miss his goofiness and his aggressive snuggling. 🐾

Fourth change: we have had 4 pups head to their new families! Only 5 left, and they are incredible pups. 3 girls - Scout, Caliber, and Glory - and 2 boys - Ranger and Major - are still available! (They are the pups in the pictures.) 🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶

There are more changes happening in the background right now, but we aren’t able to share what they are. That’s ok, we might update on that down the road, but if you don’t mind praying for us to trust God’s goodness and timing, that would be appreciated! 🫶🏻

Today our first two pups headed to their new homes! It’s interesting because Colorado Mountain Dogs are a type of livestock guardian dog, and only a few CMDs are meant to be companions only. However, our lines have generations of dogs that can be both companions and guardians.

We usually get a few that want to be guardians, and a few who are guardians and also companions (mostly work but also family dogs). Then there are the rare few that we have that are okay either way but prefer companionship, and even the more rare pups that have a temperament for therapy or service dog work.

So, today we sent 2 dogs home that were meant to be companions. They will join their families, and live life being with them most of the time, guarding kids, adventuring through the wild, and loving big. It takes a very special family for me to let those dogs go, they don’t go anywhere that doesn’t have room to run and fences, and they don’t go anywhere that the families aren’t consistently home and active. The other requirement for me is that these families have experience with XL working dogs.

Finally, the dog has to choose those people. If the pup isn’t focusing on them, and seeking them out, it’s a no for me. This whole experience has a somewhat magical quality to it, and once you see it happen, there’s no denying who the right people are for that dog.

A special family with multiple kids came today to meet a couple companion pups, and Maverick chose them. It was pure joy to see it! The moment they stepped out of their car, Maverick looked up, ran towards them, and claimed his people. It was immediate, it usually seems to be… ☺️

Then Lue’s people whom she picked came today, and she comfortably slipped back into their lives. She will be living with her mom who is a therapist with potential there, and her dad is a an outdoor guide in the boundary waters. Her future is filled with long hikes, fishing trips, kayaking, and winter camping just to name a few.

So, goodbye our sweet little Lue and our giant 24+lb Maverick! You will always be a part of our family 💜
