Local Growers Network The Local Growers Network disbanded as a group and stopped providing CSA boxes/subscriptions in 2013. We still grow veggies, raise chickens for eggs and serve a few customers and ourselves.

Here is a VERY interesting article that talks about all the additives given to hens in commercial production, not only are they given antibiotics, but arsanilic acid, aspirin, tranquilizers, terephthalic acid and carbondioxide, etc. The eggs produced by our hens are clean without any toxic substances!!!!

I personally have more pork than I know what to do with...bacon, ham, chops, asstd other cuts along with whole hog sausage. If you want to taste some great tasting pork, message me.

So, we have extra fresh, locally raised with love, pork! Apparently, I can't count and there is an extra pig that I hadn't pre-sold at Elmwood Locker. There is a total of 142 lbs, but that can be split in half. Cost would be $3.10 per lb to us and processing to the locker. Processing would be about 75 cents per lb. Let me know ASAP if anybody is interested.

We have freezer pork going in for processing very, very soon. One half or possibly one whole pig still available. We are also looking to trade: a whole hog processed for 1/4 steer processed. If anybody is interested, please let me know. Thanks. Freezer pork will end up bring approx $4 per lb total.

A friend is taking order for locally produced freezer lamb. These are pasture-raised. If you are interested, please contact Jeanne Wiskirchen at B/W Farm 2201 - 155th St., Cameron, IL 61423...call 309-368-0302.

Here's how it works:
1) Customer orders a lamb -- half or whole; reserves ASAP.
2) Payment to Jeanne is $230 for a whole lamb and $115 for a half lamb.
3) Jeanne delivers the lamb to Thrushwoods Farm in October for processing and lets the customer know it is there.
4) Customer calls Thrushwoods and gives packaging and cut instructions.
5) When it is ready to be picked up, you pay Thrushwoods' bi ll --about $65-$70 for a whole lamb and $35 or so for a half.

All in all total for whole lamb runs about $300; $150 for a half.

Lots of eggs available now at Vintages. Bring your own carton and stock up! $4.00 per doz for jumbo which are really massive!

After 5 years of growing, coordinating growers, marketing & distributing local produce, Julie & Robert have decided to take a break for 2013. LGN and Smiling Frog Farm will not be selling produce via a CSA this coming season, therefore, we highly recommend our friend and colleagues, Eloise & Dusty Spurgeon.

We currently have 8 feeder pigs. Most of them will be going to the sale barn this week (Fri). We are keeping 1 or 2 to finish out and keep for our freezer. They should be ready sometime end of February or mid-March. If anyone is interested in 1/2 a hog, processed weight typically 60-75 lbs, cost would end up somewhere around $5.50 per lb when all is said and done. We would collect $4-4.25 per lb hanging weight, plus cost to process which is less than $1.00 per lb to be paid to Elmwood Locker (or Thrushwood). We deliver animal to the locker, you call them with your instructions & desired cuts and you pick up from the locker. LET US KNOW NOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO RESERVE a whole or half hog...otherwise they are off to the sale barn. These are lovingly cared for, happy piggies who will yield rather lean pork.

if anybody wants to dispose of their pumpkins or jack o'lanterns, we would be happy to take them from you for our family of pigs. They love pumpkin and its got lots of vitamins for them! You are welcome to dump them into the back of my red truck which is parked outside the shop or just bring them in and I'll cart them away! If you have lots and want me to pick them up, just let me know when & where. Thanks!

1/2 or whole hogs will be for sale sometime, probably by May/June. If you are interested in reserving, please let me know. Price will be based on weight and feed costs over the next 7 months. We would take them for processing, probably to Elmwood Locker, you would pick up, packaged for your freezer. More info to follow.

is anybody interested in raising turkeys? Meyer Hatchery has them on sale for $3.50 per bird straight run, 15 bird minimum order. We would take 3-4, know someone else who would want 5, that leave 6 or 7 birds. Any takers?

FYI, Robert found this online. This is what a single CSA share looks like in Chicago at the Green Grocer:

September 11th - December 22nd
$17 per week or order a double share (twice the
produce) for only $29 per week. A single share is
roughly enough to feed two adults for 3-4 meals.
An example of what you might expect to find in a single share is:

4 Apples
3 Pears
1 bunch of Beets
1 Butternut squash
1 bag Argula
2lbs of Heirloom Tomatoes

A farmer's perspective 9/1/2012: I put a 450 gallon water tank below a downspout on our garage. With the rain we got it filled to the top. The rain also helped loosen the soil so that I can finally start some fall crops. I am hopefully going to get some lettuce, broccoli, and spinach in this weekend. The soaking rain also means that the soil will have enough moisture to plant garlic next month.

Hey CSA customers...your pick-ups are moving from Monday to Tuesday for the next 2 weeks! This weekend, both families of growers will be in Chicago and not available to harvest on Sunday or man the shop on Monday. (Vintages will actually be closed on Monday). Then, next Monday is the Labor Day holiday and we will be closed again. SO, TUESDAY pick up of your CSA shares for the next 2 weeks: Aug 28 and Sept 4!!!

We at Smiling Frog Farm are going to raise a flock of meat birds. If anyone is interested in a local farm-raised broiler, they will need to be ordered immediately as we have to place our order next week. Then they should be ready by first week of July. Deposit of $10 is needed. You tell us how many birds. Cost will be $3.00 per lb/they should finish out at 5-6 lbs. They will be live. You will need to butcher yourself or take to Amish in Roseville to have them butchered. Let us know ASAP if you want 1 or more birds.

FACT's Fund-a-Farmer Project – Grant applications due May 1! Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT) is now accepting grant applications for its Fund-a-Farmer Project! Grants of up to $1,500 will be awarded for projects that (1) help farms transition to pasture-based systems, (2) improve the marketing of their humane products, or (3) more generally enrich the conditions in which farm animals are raised. Working, independent family farmers that raise pigs, broiler chickens, laying hens, dairy cows and/or beef cattle are eligible to apply for any of the three types of grants. Projects involving goats and sheep are only eligible for marketing grants. Applications must be submitted online or postmarked by May 1, 2013 for awards made in August 2013.
