Does the Milking parlor now need a deep clean? Yes. Did we all survive the first night of heifer training for fall calving also yes 😅

We have three first calf heifers due so getting them used to coming into the milking area on their own, learning which stall will be theirs and what group they’re in makes a big difference in reducing stress on them when they calve in.

Cows are creatures of habit so it doesn’t take them long to get into a routine. Starting training before they calve gives us the opportunity to get them desensitized to the sounds of the milking machine and us working around their udder.

One thing that should never be done when working with heifers is stripping them before they calve 🙅🏻‍♀️ During pregnancy their body forms a natural keratin plug in the teat canal that helps keep it sealed preventing any unwanted bacteria from entering. Removing that before calving causes them to be vulnerable for mastitis.

Unpopular opinion, but I actually love getting to work with first calf heifers! Especially ones we raised from the start.

It’s been 67 days since we got Goose Brain, this morning she finally let me give her scratches!

Persistence is either paying off or the heat is finally melting the holes in her brain back together 😂

I think she’ll still be wearing her lead rope of shame for a while but I’ll take a step in the right direction!

🔥RIP to the raven who decided to test our firefighting skills by getting fried on the transformer. 🙄

Sprinting across the field in crocs with a shovel to beat out the fire wasn’t on my to do list for the day, but here we are.

We’ve frequently discussed this year that if a fire ever started while we weren’t home, there wouldn’t be much left by the time we got back.

Thankful we were home today, and for once the wind wasn’t blowing. Still feel bad for the raven though 😭🐦‍⬛

The harsh realities of this year’s severe drought is settling in. We should be baling hay this month, but instead 2 semis loaded with hay arrived this evening. The cows still have to eat through the winter, whether the hayfields grow or not.

This will be our seventh year here, and although we’ve seen dry spells before, nothing quite like this.

It wears on you after a while. The wind and dust have been relentless. Always checking the weather radar hoping for some chance we’ll get rain. Seems like every storm this year has split and gone around us.

Tonight the barn smells of alfalfa and I can breathe a little easier. Won’t be nearly enough to get us through the winter, but it’s a start.

Farming isn’t always easy, and years like this test your resolve, but I wouldn’t trade this life for anything.

4 gallons in VS. 4 gallons out! 🥛

Edna’s not our top producer but for a first calf heifer she’s steady as they come. We finally got a positive pregnancy check on her so she’ll be going dry in December.

She was a tough one to get bred back and only had silent heats. We ended up resorting to having her AI’d with angus and she took. It pains me to breed one of our registered Jerseys to beef but a cross calf is better than no calf 😅

Did you know that beef semen has a greater rate of conception for dairy heifers and cows that have difficulty conceiving with dairy semen?
