So, we have all heard that saying give more safe, more or buy more, save more. When it comes to medical research, the saying could not be truer. One of the most underfunded government research is for cancer. While working in Oncology, we found that many of the drugs that were developed to help pediatric cancer actually were better suited for adult cancer treatments. This is why you often hear me say if we find the key to unlock one treatment door, we will have the key to lead us to the molds to the other keys, that will unlock all the doors.
I have been putting this post off for a while. I believe it's probably because kids are the most painful thing for me to talk about after losing my best friend recently- my brother Darren, and now, another one of my most favorite people in the world, my Uncle Robert Westhoff. Both of these men were cut from the same cloth when it came to goodness and kindness.
See, that is the problem with cancer, It doesn't care how good you are, or how much the world needs you, it's going to battle you, and take everything you have.
There are so many people in my life that I've lost to cancer. One of the hardest for me, and the first I remember, was a couple my parents were very close to lost their little boy to a brain tumor. We spent a lot of time with this family before Kevin was diagnosed, and even though he got very sick his mother still made sure he had a life. I remember we would take shopping trips and he would be pulled in a wagon walking through the mall. It actually may have been his wheelchair that was adapted and I'm remembering it as a wagon because that would have been more fun. No matter whether it was his wheelchair or a wagon, his mother made sure we got to spend time with Kevin doing things that we all enjoyed.
If tears were dollars we wouldn't have to ask anyone for help funding cancer research. My tears alone would have already paid for the cure. Unfortunately, our tears are just the example of the love we have for those we lost to this gracious beastly monster.
Search your couch cushions that little bin under the dryer drum and give what you can. If you still can't find the money to give, please share this with all of your friends and ask them to share. There are people always looking for ways to help the world. There's no judgment, just love.
For those who are Christians and believe that we are in the season where Christ will rise again, remember that the greatest gift he needed to give was life.
Give the gift of life. Donate to St. Baldricks for childhood cancer research.
Help us unlock all the doors and knock out the beastly monster for good!
