CHERRY PIE OLD FASHIONED
Just in time for the holiday weekend - who wants cherry pie? If you are a fan of specialty Old Fashioneds (I'm looking at you Steven and Stephen!) then you will love this one, which brings the taste of warm bourbon with all the elements of a homemade cherry pie in one glass. There's a lot going on here, but it's soooooo worth it. Trust me.
2 oz bourbon. As always, the better the bourbon, the better the drink.5 oz brown sugar simple syrup*
1 Luxardo cherry
cherry juice from the Luxardo jar
2 dashes each of Fee brothers aromatic bitters and black walnut bitters
dash vanilla
pinch of cinnamon
orange zest
Maple syrup
graham cracker crumbs.
First prepare your old fashioned glass. Put a little maple syrup on a plate and put graham cracker crumbs on another plate. Dip the rim into the syrup, then the crumbs. This will be your "pie crust" and it really adds to the drink.
Drop a big ice cube and a Luxardo cherry in the glass. Add your bourbon, then stir in the brown sugar simple syrup. *If you don't have any, you can substitute a teaspoon of brown sugar or a half ounce of maple syrup. You just need a little sweetener, not much.
Add a spoonful (or two) of the juice from the cherry jar, your dashes of bitters, then add a tiny bit of vanilla and cinnamon and stir well. Finally use the zest of an orange and squeeze it over the drink to release the oils, then drop that in there and swirl.
The more you sip and swirl, the better this one gets.
Cheers!
