🍄 Wellness Wednesday: What exactly is a “functional mushroom”?

You’ve probably heard the term functional mushroom thrown around a lot lately... but what does it actually mean?

Simply put, some mushrooms are enjoyed primarily for their flavor and texture, while others have a long history of being used for the naturally occurring compounds they contain.

And sometimes, they’re BOTH!

🍄 Oyster mushrooms are delicious on your dinner plate and contain beta-glucans and other naturally occurring compounds.

🧠 Lion’s Mane is an edible gourmet mushroom that’s also widely studied for compounds associated with cognitive and neurological health.

🌿 Reishi is usually too tough and bitter to cook like a traditional mushroom, so it’s commonly prepared as teas, powders and extracts.

🌈 Turkey Tail is another tough, woody mushroom that is better suited to extraction than your frying pan.

That’s one of the things we love most about fungi. There is an incredible amount of diversity hiding inside a kingdom most of us were taught very little about.

Fresh, dried, powdered or extracted... there’s a whole lot more to mushrooms than the little white buttons at the grocery store. 🍄🌿

🍄 MONDAY MYTH! 🍄

MYTH: Mushrooms are vegetables. 🥕🥦

FACT: Mushrooms aren't plants at all!

Mushrooms belong to an entirely different kingdom of life: Fungi.

Unlike plants, fungi don't use photosynthesis to make their food. Instead, they obtain nutrients from the material around them.

And here's the really cool part: the mushroom you see is only part of the organism!

The mushroom is the fruiting body, while the fungus also grows as a network of tiny threads called mycelium throughout its food source.

So the next time someone tells you to eat your vegetables, you can confidently say:

"Do mushrooms count?" 😏🍄

Technically... nope.

What a week! ❤️

Sorry we’ve been a little quiet this week! We’ve been in Des Moines, Iowa, cheering Henry on at the 2026 AAU Junior Olympics!

Henry competed in both javelin and discus against athletes from all over the country, and the experience was incredible. He made new friends, caught up with some old ones, and got the chance to compete on a national stage.

And we have to brag just a little... Henry finished 12th in the nation in javelin out of 69 competitors! 🎉 That’s after only picking up javelin recently and in just his second competition ever. He didn’t even get to use his own javelin because we learned the hard way that implements have to be checked in at least three hours before competition. 😂 Live and learn!

Discus day was a whole different adventure. A rain delay had us sitting in the car for five hours waiting for competition to resume. Once things finally got going, Henry only had two practice throws before competing. Two foot fouls and one less-than-perfect throw meant it wasn’t the finish he wanted, but that’s sports. You learn, you grow, and you come back stronger. Next year will be different.

Most of all, we want to say thank you. So many of our customers have watched Henry grow up behind our market booth, helped cheer him on, donated to his trip, asked about his competitions, and supported him along the way. It means more to our family than you know. ❤️

Henry is headed into his junior year, and now it’s time to trade track & field for football season! 🏈 That means you probably won’t see him at the markets for the next several months.

And LeAnne is definitely going to miss having her market sidekick around every Saturday. 🥹

We’re incredibly proud of him, and we can’t wait to see what comes next. 12th in the nation isn’t a bad way to wrap up the summer! 🇺🇸🏅

🍄 Tiny Beginnings, Big Harvests

What you're looking at are primordia, often called pins. They are the very first stage of a mushroom's life.

Before a mushroom becomes the beautiful clusters you see at our markets, it starts as these tiny formations emerging from the mycelium. Given the right combination of fresh air, humidity, temperature, and light, these little pins will rapidly develop into full-sized mushrooms over the next several days.

Every harvest begins right here.

It's one of our favorite stages to watch because it means all the work that came before, making grain spawn, preparing substrate, inoculating blocks, and patiently waiting through colonization, is finally paying off.

Whether it's the fuzzy white beginnings of Lion's Mane or the tiny button-like oyster mushroom pins, each one is a reminder that nature works on its own schedule, rewarding patience with something incredible.

Next time you stop by our booth, you'll be seeing the finished product. Today, we thought we'd show you where the journey begins.

Have you ever wondered why our mushroom extracts contain alcohol?

It's one of the questions we hear most often at farmers markets!

The answer is simple: alcohol is an essential part of the extraction process.

Many of the beneficial compounds found in functional mushrooms are water-soluble, while others are alcohol-soluble. By using both hot water and food-grade organic cane alcohol, we're able to create a true dual extract that captures a broader range of naturally occurring compounds than water alone.

The alcohol also serves another important purpose: it helps preserve the extract naturally, giving it a long shelf life without the need for artificial preservatives.

Our finished extracts contain approximately 25–30% alcohol, similar to many herbal tinctures. Most people take just 1–2 mL per serving, so the actual amount of alcohol consumed is very small. If you prefer, you can add your extract to a cup of hot tea or coffee and let it sit for a few minutes, which will allow much of the alcohol to evaporate while leaving the extracted compounds behind.
