Three Dogs Farm & Timber

Three Dogs Farm & Timber Poultry farm and timber grower. We started Three Dogs Farm & Timber after we moved to Bivins, Texas to get away from the big city life in Dallas.

After so many years of terrible traffic and being told what to plant by our Homeowners Association we wanted room, no traffic and a less stressful life. We started off with 6 chickens for eggs...and after 2 ended up being roosters, decided to get 4 more...and then through the winter we only got one or two eggs a day...so we let a broody hen hatch out some chicks and things kind of snowballed. I lo

ve having chickens and love the taste of fresh eggs and knowing what they eat. Since I had Cancer I learned and became more aware of pesticide and chemicals that cause cancer. I now grow my own fruits and vegetables as organically as possible. I have started growing mealworms for the chickens and ferment their feed and will soon sprout grains for them too. I never gave much thought to what we ate and all the chemicals that are added until I had Cancer and got even more weak and sicker after having several surgeries and being put on many prescription drugs. Starting the farm has basically turned my health around. When I feed my animals and care for them, I do it not only to make them healthy...I do it for my health too. My husband calls it the chicken diet, but it is so much more...they basically saved my life. I just want anyone who buys my eggs or poultry, that I do eat the eggs, will eat the meat and you can be sure that it is healthy and good to do so. I have lost 65 pounds, gotten off of all but two medications and am more active than I have been in years since starting the farm. My chickens get fruits and veggies I grow too, they are pretty spoiled but provide us with a lot of enjoyment, we call it chicken TV...we sit out under the trees with them and interact with them several times a day. We will slowly get our farm expanded and hopefully will have herbs, produce and jellies to sell at the Farmers Market next year too, or open a roadside stand at our farm so others who may not be able can enjoy the fruits of our labors too.

I finally got my first set of after treatment and surgery scans! Good news on the CT scans of my chest abdomen and pelvis, it says no metastatic disease seen, of course that is what it said on my MRI after chemotherapy too, so I will take it with a grain of salt…because my pathology proved otherwise. My full body nuclear bone scan had some areas lit up, they think it may be old injuries or possibly arthritis, one is in the front of my skull bone though…I am scheduled for a brain MRI and another full body bone scan, but I asked if I could wait a bit. I have a pretty bad bruise still from the IV and injections after 9 days, and have been getting bad headaches since then too. It could be from the dye injected, or allergies, who knows? They did one of the Cancer Antigen tests finally and it is 12.7, supposedly that is good. My blood counts are still off, white blood count and some others having to do with immunity are still not normal, but slightly better. I finished radiation January 24th, you would think it would be better since it has been almost 2 months. I am still here, but some days are tough, I may still be standing, but even that is rough at times.

I am still standing, this past year and 4 months has been tough. I lost a lot of muscle strength, but have been working on it. My physical therapist says I am still a lot stronger than many women my age. I still have a lower than normal white blood count so I need to be mindful of where I go and what I do. I have started to feed my critters again, but my flock is much smaller than it used to be to be. I have w**d eated and mowed a bit, lol then been worn out for several days. It is going to take time, but my doctors think I will get my strength back eventually…I use to carry about 70 pounds of feed in buckets, not so much anymore. I can’t throw 50 pound feed sacks right now, but I can move them…I have to bear hug them.

I had a pretty good sized chunk removed from under my left arm and it starts hurting and swells when I do very much with that arm. But, I did muck out part of a chicken coop to test it. That was before I knew about my low white blood count. I guess it is common after 33 rounds of radiation. I will have to stick with small projects for awhile. They want me on hormone blockers and CDK 4/6 inhibitors, they don’t particularly make me feel very good, they are decreasing my dose and maybe it will help. If it doesn’t I may have to switch gears and do something different.

I am a tough 65 year old, I will beat this…I may just have to move to the beach and gather sea shells instead.

Yea! I finished having radiation! Now for getting all healed up and ready for testing soon. I have some rehab to do, so I am not done yet, but at least I am seeing some light at the end of the tunnel.

I have been having radiation treatments and am almost 2/3 done, hopefully I can get some energy back after I complete the treatments. Cross your fingers and say a little prayer for me, will you? Since chemotherapy didn’t work on me, I am hoping radiation does. I love being outside, having a garden, taking care of my farm in general…it has been a hard year with this whole cancer thing. Let’s all hope next year is better for all of us!
Happy New Year!

10/24/2023

I have not updated in awhile…I am still here. I have not healed up from the two surgeries in two weeks 100%. I hope to get the drain out tomorrow after 8 weeks! I have another Radiation Oncology appointment soon, to create a new game plan since my pathology indicated the chemotherapy didn’t work at all and I had more lymph nodes involved…it is why I had a second surgery. As soon as I heal up some from the drain tube, I plan on trying to do a sort of inventory on my birds. I have not been out in the yard but we had some more deaths due to predators, I lost a Tom turkey and no telling what else. But, also had a few chicks and ducks hatch.

I am tough, but cancer treatment is hard on you. I am not sure how long it will take after they get done with me, until I have strength back. Time will tell. I may have to take a year off…and concentrate on my health more, I am not getting any younger.

09/20/2023

Still alive and fairly well, but have had two surgeries. I am afraid the breast MRI was incorrect, it looks like chemotherapy did not work. I found that out after the first surgery through the pathology report, a second surgery was needed to hopefully get the rest out. Time will tell. I am still recovering from the second surgery, but will soon start taking hormone blockers and possibly CDK 4/6 kinase inhibitors? Hopefully they will keep more cancer from growing, but I still have radiation to go too.

09/03/2023

I made it through not one, but two surgeries! I still need to heal and I may have a bit of an issue for awhile picking things up that weigh more than a cup of coffee…but, I am still here and fighting. I am still not selling anything and may not for quite some time, if at all. I have a lot to get through yet.

08/05/2023

Things did not go as planned, I still haven’t had surgery. I had to get a new surgeon…will have to see him to set up surgery and hope my insurance approves everything this time. It will be awhile longer because I have to get the dye injection and surgery approved too. So far they only approved seeing the new surgeon in his office. If it is too long I will have to have the pre-surgical testing redone too.

07/02/2023

I have finally started feeling better since my last chemotherapy. I had an MRI and chemotherapy appears to have worked! I have a pre-surgical consult in about a week. I will probably have surgery mid to late July. I had a consultation with a Radiation Oncologist already too.

06/12/2023

Well, Taxol was worse than Red Devil chemotherapy, Neuropathy in my hands and feet hurts a lot, acid reflux was worse than nausea too. But, they reduced the Taxol treatments to 4 and gave me 1100ml from the 2nd to 4th treatments. I had kidney and bladder infections from it even after reducing the amount of Taxol by 15%. The Oncologist thought the symptoms were from the steroids I had to take prior to the chemo infusions. The Oncologist reduced the amount of steroids too…still not feeling good, but had my last chemotherapy on June 7th. Next up is surgery…after I regain some strength.

04/28/2023

Well, got finished with the Red Devil & Cytoxan chemo course and started Taxol yesterday. It took longer to infuse, but is milder that the previous one…I do not feel as awful. I hope it stays that way! I have 8 total infusions of Taxol, I may loose what little hair I have left now. But I will trade it for more energy and no vomiting. I have had some usual things happen, like small itchy blisters with the first course of chemo and unusual coloration of my skin that kind of looked like leopard spots. But, the Oncologist said I did really good and this second drug should be a breeze for me. I am thankful for that, and that I didn’t have an allergic reaction to it.
