JULY in the garden!
July in the garden always starts off glorious but usually ends in exhaustion. Where I live this is my hardest month to garden….we usually have heat waves, some years there is drought, and this is when the w**d pressure can start to feel impossible. Spring is over….there is a lull in blooms and the heat makes it hard to stay on top of those chores!
What’s blooming? July is where hydrangeas thrive! The mop heads are in their glory in the beginning of the month and by the end some of the early panicle hydrangeas are starting to bloom. In my yard milkw**d, echinops, yarrow, bee balm and lavender are blooming in July. Sneezew**d, coneflower and rudbeckia are usually starting to bloom end of July/August.
For your annuals: lisianthus, strawflower, snapdragons, nigella, ageratum, and zinnias are all blooming. The early varieties of dahlias make throw out of few blooms during this month too!
Garden chores: W**D, WATER, DEADHEAD spent blooms. Strip the bottom leaves of your dahlias to give them better airflow to prevent powdery mildew and make sure you are fertilizing them once a week or biweekly. Take notes in your garden of what’s work and what’s not and what needs to be moved in the fall! Go out for ice cream, watch the bumblebees search for pollen, make a bouquet and watch the sun turn your yard golden as it sets in the evening.
