Our first batch of Pink Oyster Mushrooms are starting to fruit! They currently look like some coral from deep in the ocean. Mushrooms grow incredibly fast, so stay tuned for more progress photos! Our Pearl Oysters haven’t started to fruit yet, but they should start in a day or two!

Back to the Roots program is fantastic! For every kit that grows and tags them, they donate a kit to a classroom to teach kids about mushrooms! Such a cool company and so easy to grow these beauties! We love programs that give back to the community and they have definitely got us as customers for life! (This is not a sponsored post, we just really love them!)

As we go into late fall and early winter, our gardening tasks aren’t yet complete. This week we have been cutting down the remaining annual crops and adding them to our compost bin.

We work hard to build the soil and when the plants break down in the compost bin, they return a lot of the nutrients that they pulled from the soil to grow.

Some gardeners leave their veggies to rot in place. We prefer to pull the material in fall and allow it to compost over winter so that it is ready in the spring when we begin our planting frenzy. BUT we also planted several pollinator plants nearby that the insects can use for winter cover and we’ll be expanding our pollinator areas in the spring.

I won’t lie… seeming our garden barren is a bit sad. It just makes us work even harder to plan for next year’s crop. Next year will be an even bigger and better garden because we are officially expanding Hogs and Hens Urban Farm to include a permaculture food forest! Stay tuned for details!

Spent some time harvesting more tomatoes today. And YES… our plants are blooming still. 🤷🏼‍♀️ About 20 more pounds of tomatoes today, a few more sweet potatoes that we found and the end of our jalapeños.

My Juliet tomato plants are taller than me and still are loaded with green tomatoes and blooms! I’ll be covering them soon and hope to get another 20-30 pounds of tomatoes from them before I pull them for winter.

I’d say year 1 was a successful year on the homestead!

First batch of diced tomatoes have officially reached their cooling stage. As they cool, the lids will draw down and make a slight popping noise as they seal.

We canned 12 pints for our first batch. Tons of tomatoes have been eaten raw, but the plants are now producing much more than we can eat before they go bad, so we decided to start our pantry stocking with diced tomatoes.

Next up will be home grown marinara sauce. We’ll be using 100% home grown herbs and veggies and we can’t wait!

Once this batch is cool and we confirm they all seal, we’ll remove the bands, label them all, and store them in our cabinet until we’re ready to eat them.

What is your favorite thing to can or preserve?

Today’s harvest! Our tomatoes 🍅 are struggling with splitting because of all the rain we have had in the last few days. I went ahead and picked them to finish ripening indoors in an attempt to keep them from becoming further damaged or being eaten by critters.

We’re excited that our carrots are starting to really take off, and we have been harvesting turnips off and on all summer. The basket also has green beans, chard, grape tomatoes, onions, a radish, and some leaf lettuce all hidden by the lettuce greens.

How is your harvest going so far?

Today is planting day! Today we will be planting all the seeds to get our fall crops started in our new greenhouse (and some in the house because they don’t like heat!) When our summer crops finish in about 2 months, our fall (cool weather) crops will be ready to go into the place of the summer plants we’ll pull out! Lots of these will get potted up into bigger pots before that, but we got a once in a lifetime deal on all of these Jiffy seed starting pellets so that’s what we are using to get them started.

Are you getting your fall crops started?

Building your gardens is a task that doesn’t need to cost a fortune! We were given some old fence panels of privacy fence that had rotted at the bottom from years of ground contact. They were not treated lumber, and as such they are safe to use for planting. Bob cut the bad parts off, and made uniform sized boards that were then put together into 9’x3’ beds. We didn’t have a table long enough to work on for the build, so he used an old pallet as a work bench. These beds are entirely made of reclaimed lumber and will be the last beds we build for this year’s garden.

Stay tuned to see what we decide to plant in these exciting new additions to the homestead!

And yes, we tend to do a lot of our homestead work at night. The mosquitos may be bad, but the heat is much easier to tolerate here in Ohio at night.

The front of the homestead is taking shape. The marigolds will help with unwanted pests like mosquitos, and we are hoping the transplanted Black Eyed Susans perk up and take root now that they have had a few days of consistent watering as well as a bit of water and sunshine from Mother Nature.

Those will self propagate and spread, and the marigolds we plan to let go to seed so that next year, we’ll have some of them sprout up on their own.

What you can’t see are the hundreds of bulbs planted throughout the beds. We had hundreds of tulips and daffodils that had multiplied like crazy but were being smothered and stunted by invasive morning glories. After lots of work carefully moving them, we are hoping several of them decide to take root in their new homes, which will give us blooms in the spring before the other flowers wake up from their winter slumber.

Just a few progress updates. We have 8/14 beds finished. We are planting a bit late in an attempt to delay harvest until after our wedding and honeymoon. The tomatoes are blooming and a few have green tomatoes. The trellis is going up soon for the peas and beans, as well as a cattle panel fence for support of our tomatoes. We planted several varieties of lettuce this past weekend and are super excited to see which ones thrive!

Another tool made here on the farm is a seed dropper. We sawed a piece of conduit and cut the end at a 45° angle. You scoot the dirt aside and drop a seed down the tube to avoid having to bend as much.

Later today, we’ll be attaching a piece of wooden dowel to the end to dig the hole as we learned the tube gets clogged easily.

06/03/2022

Sometimes you need a tool that you don’t have… In those cases, here on the farm…we make them ourselves! Heather is welding a pallet breaker tool out of some pipe. It is basically a fork that works much like a pry bar to disassemble a pallet much quicker and with less damage to the wood.

Yes, she should be wearing long sleeves. Yes, she should be wearing a backwards hat to keep sparks from going down the back of her shirt. Yes she should be wearing pants. Just pretend she did all of that…
