Today, I learned a valuable lesson. I adore all of the animals I keep. If I didn't, what would be the point right? But as we growing into ourselves at the farm, part of what makes it all work is letting some of them go to the right homes, for new adventure and purposes beyond our fences.
As I guide us deeper into a focused fiber farm, I recognize I have to shift some things around and ultimately, move some animals on to make room for what aligns. So, I had made the decision to let my holland lop Goose go. We had the right home where I knew he would be cared for well and given a good purpose. I took a retainer and had everything set up.
But for TWO DAYS I was upset and totally regretting the decision. He and I bonded much differently than others. I have bonds with them too, but Goose is special. He was not bred in house, I chose him. He is sweet, playful, and adores receiving and showing affection. On top of that, he is stupidly cute. I was picturing his little face when I tried to fall asleep. This little dude is my companion bun. I'm just not ready. I just didn't grasp how deep it was until I had committed to not seeing him anymore.
Luckily, they were super understanding, and I was completely happy to return the retainer. I do feel bad because I flip flopped and that's just not fair to the other side. We have a litter coming with his first offspring. Mama bun should be due on the 31st. So, there will be baby Gooses to carry on the family name very soon, and if anyone wants a magical little one that will steal your heart, we can make that happen.
But the lesson here: Make sure you are absolutely 100% ok with a sale prior to commitment especially as a seller! I don't ever want to back out of a sale again because my customers deserve predictability.
I hope this shows that I do indeed love these animals and while I love being a part of the rehoming process, I'm not into breeding just for the business. I'm trying to create sweet dispositioned little creatures that bring joy who look good doing it! Goose is king of the castle here!
