Not a great hatch, but got a pair of Crele Penedesenca (3rd chick splayed leg, so have to see if it’s fixable) . I tried USPS again because UPS jostled eggs around on country roads on the delivery truck for 10-12 hours vs USPS holding for pickup at PO. But apparently USPS was still rougher, because this is the worst hatch rate this year. 😭

Moved the Brahma and Barred Rock roosters plus hens to their “new” breeding pens - in the fence with the sheep, goats and livestock guardian dogs. MacGyver definitely has more inclination to protect poultry, laying down next to the pens to watch, but McMissy isn’t yet trustworthy around them.

I got heartbreaking news from a wonderful fellow breeder who I had purchased hatching eggs and chicks from, that a few of their chickens tested positive for ALV. The issue being, it can spread via hatching eggs from infected hens. They don’t know how widespread it is in their flock, so we have to take precautions as well. The unfortunate thing is that those chicks have shared space with other chicks who are from purchased hatching eggs from other breeders as well. And since it can also spread via contact, p**p and saliva, it could have infected other chicks as well. 😭 But, it’s usually not symptomatic until 15+ weeks old and the they are maybe 5 weeks old?

So, we are “locking everything down” , researching which lab and test to use, so we can begin testing the chicks to determine what we’re dealing with.
While the older pullets in the grow out pens that are ready for their new homes haven’t had direct contact with the “ground zero” group, there’s a slight chance of cross contamination. Thus, no chicken will be leaving the farm while we figure out what we’re dealing with.

There’s no cure and no vaccine for ALV, so anything that tests positive has to be culled. And even if the potentially exposed “future breeder” chicks test negative, they will likely have to be retested when they are close to laying age.

Just to be clear, we currently don’t know if there are any ALV-positive birds here, but we’re taking precautions, since we don’t want to risk spreading it further.

Frank cleaned 3 grow out pens and 2 of the small breeding pens today! 💪 I moved chickens around and refilled the pens with clean sawdust. It was hot and sweaty work, but needed to be done. So grateful for his help to do this.
We planned to go to the river, but instead enjoyed a warm rain shower.

Been not posting much lately. Partly, because spending time as a family and a busy weekend.
Also, trying to sort pullets and hens, but too hot to do it during the hottest part of the day, plus with 2 kids, it takes 2x as long to sort with “Mama, look at this kitten” every few minutes 🥰 and fussing because the other one wants to get out of the stroller . 😂
So have been trying to wake up earlier, but it takes time for the body to adjust to a new wake up time.
I have some eggs in the incubator, but took a little bit of a break from big hatches, until I can get grow out pens and brooders cleaned out, some of the existing pullet orders filled.

Plus, the last big hatch, I had unexpected issues which resulted in losses including the last batch of Silver Ameraucanas , Bielefelders and others from Mountain to Meadow Chicks. 😭 That really disappointed me since I had a “good” hatch for shipped eggs and then due to a “perfect storm”, lost the chicks plus a lot of mine. So we have to do some revamping of the “Hatch House”, since now it’s getting too hot and affecting the air quality negatively. 😩

Nevertheless, we keep going, even if it’ll set back our breeding plans and loss of a substantial chunk of $ and losses from our own chicks we hatched for orders and ourselves . Unfortunately, now it’s too hot to get more shipped hatching eggs. 😢 Some people ship year round, but I don’t really want to take the chance of “cooked” eggs in the mail, before they even get here!

Heading to Syracuse for the Finger Lakes Feather Club Show today! We’re looking forward to meeting up with thehearthandherd , Kaleidoscope Coop, and others who have brought their beautiful poultry. And it’s a good way to get hatching eggs that haven’t traveled in the mail system for days.
