I've realized the most memorable winery experiences usually aren't because of the wine itself.

They're because of how the guest experience made me feel.

The best tasting room experiences tend to do a few things really well:
🍷 They ask questions before giving information�🍷 They make people feel comfortable asking questions�🍷 They focus on connection instead of proving expertise

People rarely remember every tasting note.

They remember whether they felt welcomed.�They remember whether they felt included.�They remember whether they felt comfortable enough to simply enjoy the experience.

And for me I also remember how my dogs were treated. 🐾

Because wine is experience, not a stuffy exam. Wine should be fun, not fussy 🍷

There’s a difference between “dogs allowed” and *actually dog friendly* 🐾🍷

Barrel Oak will always have a special place for us because it was the first winery we visited with Lola. So some places become more than just wine.

Is it my favorite wine in Virginia? No. But not every winery memory is about chasing the best glass.

Sometimes it’s about the dogs settling in beside you, finding a place where everyone feels welcome, and spending a really good afternoon together.

Dog rating: 10/10 🐾
Would we go back? Absolutely

Pro tip: pack a picnic so you can enjoy the day with their beautiful views and your cute pups!

One year ago I thought I was starting a wine page 🍷

Turns out I was building something I didn’t fully expect.

A place for people who still pick wine based on labels. A place for dog moms. A place for people who love little rituals, winery weekends, couch cuddles, and figuring things out as they go.

Somewhere along the way, this page also helped me learn something about myself. It helped me stop trying to fit into what I thought I “should” be and lean more into who I already was.

I’m grateful for my WSET certifications and everything they taught me, but they also reminded me that wine is bigger than tasting notes and terminology. Wine is stories, comfort, memories, people, and moments.

I’m still figuring things out. Still choosing dogs and wine. Still believing wine should be fun, not fussy.

And if you’ve been here for any part of this first year — thank you 🤍🐾
